Job description

Overview

Responsible for the delivery of safe, effective, and quality patient-family centered care in the OR and other areas of perioperative services for all patient populations.

Assesses patient/family health problems and resources, takes a leadership role in the development, implementation, and outcomes evaluation of a plan for nursing care provided by the nursing team. Provides technical nursing care and interventions to designated patient populations.

This position requires providing service to one or more age populations including an ill neonate through geriatric patient population in a manner that demonstrates an understanding of the functional/developmental age of the individual served. Admission coordination, making nursing assignments, coordinating shift activities, and quality control functions are also required.

This position requires full understanding and active participation in fulfilling the Mission of San Gabriel Valley Medical Center. It is expected that the employee demonstrate behavior consistent with the Core Values. The employee shall support San Gabriel Valley Medical Center’s strategic plan and the goals and direction of the Performance Improvement Plan (PIP).

Responsibilities
  • Promote the mission, vision, and values of the organization.
  • Assess patients at intervals as stated in policies and procedures.
  • Develop an individualized perioperative patient plan of care.
  • Implement the plan of care by protecting the patient from injury caused by extraneous objects and chemical, electrical, laser, mechanical, and thermal sources.
  • Perform accounting procedures to protect the patient from unintended retained surgical items.
  • Perform interventions necessary to ensure that the patient’s procedure is performed on the correct site, side, and level.
  • Manage the patient’s specimens according to organizational policy and procedures.
  • Communicate the patient’s current status to relevant parties throughout the continuum of care.
  • Administer medications safely and correctly.
  • Perform interventions to maintain the patient’s wound and tissue perfusion at or above baseline levels.
  • Perform interventions to maintain the status of the patient’s genitourinary, gastrointestinal, musculoskeletal, endocrine, respiratory, cardiovascular, and neurological systems and fluid, electrolyte, and acid-base balances at or above baseline levels.
  • Perform interventions to ensure the patient is at or returned to normothermia at the conclusion of the immediate postoperative period.
  • Perform interventions to protect the patient from surgical site infection.
  • Assess the knowledge level of the patient or designated support person.
  • Provide education regarding the expected psychosocial response, nutritional management, medication management, pain management, wound management, and expected responses to the operative or invasive procedure.
  • Involve the patient or designated support person actively in decisions affecting his or her perioperative plan of care and the rehabilitation process.
  • Protect the patient’s rights, dignity, and privacy.
  • Provide age-specific, culturally competent, ethical care within legal standards of practice.
  • Provide consistent and comparable care regardless of the setting.
  • Evaluate the patient’s progress toward attaining outcomes.
  • Transfer care as applicable.
  • Delegate tasks according to the state Nurse Practice Act and job descriptions.
  • Document nursing care accurately, completely, and legibly.
  • Collaborate effectively with other disciplines as applicable.
  • Participate in quality review and performance improvement projects.
  • Participate in the performance appraisal process.
  • Use problem-solving and conflict resolution skills to foster effective work relationships with team members.
  • Maintain required competencies.
  • Pursue professional growth and participate in a professional organization.
  • Act as a patient advocate and maintain privacy and confidentiality of individuals and health information.
  • Work irregular hours including call hours.
Qualifications

Education/Training/Experience

Graduate from an accredited school of nursing.

Bachelor's degree in nursing preferred.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Bilingual (English/Spanish/Vietnamese/Chinese) preferred.

Computer skills.

Licenses/Certifications

Current California RN License.

Current BLS, ACLS Card.
