Job summary

California Department of State Hospitals – Atascadero is seeking a limited term, full-time Registered Nurse – Shift Lead (Safety) to oversee Level of Care staff across an 8-hour shift and ensure safe, effective patient care on the unit.

The role requires collaboration with the unit RN, patient assessments, medication administration, and strong documentation practices within the Trauma-Informed Care framework. In-office work location is San Luis Obispo County.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

• Organize, prioritize, delegate and monitor LOC staff on the 8-hour shift.
• Collaborate with the unit RN to ensure appropriate medical care and assessments per the PATT tool.
• Communicate shift information clearly to the Unit Supervisor.
• Provide feedback to assist with Performance Appraisal Evaluations.
• Maintain accurate unit documentation including daybook entries, acuities, staffing reports, and logs.
• Monitor staff and patient safety and ensure policy-compliant inspections.
• Supervise patient activities and assist in clinical procedures when needed.
• Apply TIC principles and implement Therapeutic Strategies and Interventions including containment and emergency response.

Job Description And Duties

The limited term, full time Registered Nurse - Shift Lead (Safety) will be directed by the Unit Supervisor or Supervising Registered Nurse on the assigned Program/Unit at the Department of State Hospitals – Atascadero (ASH). The incumbent will be responsible for the following duties but not limited to:

• Responsible for organizing, prioritizing, delegating, and monitoring the assignments of the Level of Care (LOC) staff that are assigned to the unit for the 8-hour shift.
• Collaborates with unit Registered Nurse (RN) to ensure the delivery of appropriate medical care and assessments as outlined in the RN Physical Assessment Tracking Tool (PATT).
• Works directly with their Unit Supervisor providing clear communication of all pertinent information related to the shift they lead.
• Provides feedback on the LOC staff they oversee to assist the Unit Supervisor or Supervising Registered Nurse in making accurate Performance Appraisal Evaluations.
• Maintains accurate unit documentation including daybook entries, acuities, daily staffing report, and sign in logs.
• Monitors and maintains staff and patient safety ensuring all security inspections and audits are completed per hospital policy.
• Helps to create a clean, safe and therapeutic environment for patients.
• Apply mental health principles and relationship security with patients.
• Supervise patient activities.
• Perform nursing procedures such as administering medications, including oral medications and hypodermic injections.
• Observing and assessing patients physical condition and behavior and reporting significant changes to a unit supervisor or physician and recording nursing notes in the patients record.
• Aassessing and recording patient acuity ratings.
• Determining Nursing Diagnosis and preparing Nursing Care Plans.
• Assessing and authorizing Restraint and Seclusion.
• CPR, and following infection control procedures.
• Searching for drugs, contraband, weapons and inspecting facilities to identify security breaches that could lead to the escape of a patient.
• Applies and demonstrates knowledge of Trauma Informed Care (TIC) and correct methods in Therapeutic Strategies and Interventions (TSI), that includes patient containment, heavy lifting, applying restraints, and responding to emergency situations throughout the hospital.
