The Surgery Trauma Progressive Care unit is the primary unit for trauma patients at VCU. We are the only Level I Trauma Center in the Richmond area certified by the American College of Surgeons. Our patients have sustained complex traumatic injuries such as gunshot wounds, motor vehicle accidents, falls, and assaults. Experienced RNs are encouraged to apply to this fast‑paced, high‑acuity unit. We offer extra training in the care of complex trauma patients. Grow your knowledge in the care of patients with chest tubes, tracheostomies, multiple drains, and complex wound care.

The Clinical Nurse I job integrates technical skills and theoretical knowledge to meet the needs of the patient and family. This job assists the health care team with the prevention of illness and injury, maintenance of wellness, and provision of comfort. It provides direction, education, and begins to acquire leadership skills at the unit level. It delivers and accurately documents direct, age‑specific care to a patient or group of patients based on medical orders and a multidisciplinary plan of care. It also safely administers prescribed medications, identifying incompatibilities and/or interactions.

The Clinical Nurse II job demonstrates mastery of clinical skills and applies this knowledge to a specific patient population. It assists the health care team with prevention, wellness, and comfort. It recognizes changes in patient situations and intervenes appropriately. It mobilizes resources to meet individualized needs, provides direction and education, and assumes leadership at the unit level. It delivers accurate documentation of direct, age‑specific care and safely administers medications.

The Clinical Nurse III job demonstrates expert clinical knowledge at the unit level and applies this to a specific patient population. It assists the health care team with prevention, wellness, and comfort. It anticipates changes in patient situations and intervenes appropriately. It provides direction, education, and serves as a role model in a clinical setting. It delivers and documents direct, age‑specific care and safely administers prescribed medications.

Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for Hire
  • Clin I, Clin II, Clin III: Current RN licensure in Virginia or an eligible compact state.
Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for Continued Employment
  • Clin I, Clin II, Clin III: Current RN licensure in Virginia, AHA BLS HCP Certification or equivalent.
Experience REQUIRED
  • Clin I: N/A
  • Clin II: 12 to 24 months RN experience
  • Clin III: 3 years of clinical experience
Experience PREFERRED
  • Clin I: Experience as an LPN, nursing assistant, or care partner in an acute care setting.
  • Clin II, Clin III: Academic Health Care experience or experience with a similar patient population.
Education/Training REQUIRED
  • Clin I, Clin II, Clin III: Diploma or Associate’s Degree from a professional nursing program recognized by the state Board of Nursing.
  • All RNs without a Bachelor’s degree in Nursing (or higher) must enroll in an approved RN‑to‑BSN program within two years of start date and finish within five years unless grandfathered.
Education/Training PREFERRED
  • Clin I, Clin II, Clin III: Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (or higher) from an accredited program.
  • Clin III: Certification in a specialty area.
Independent Action(s) Required
  • Follows documented physician or licensed independent provider orders.
  • Practices within Virginia nursing regulations.
  • Guided by ANA Code of Ethics and national nursing standards.
  • All practice follows VCUHS policies and procedures.
Supervisory Responsibilities (if Applicable)
  • Clin I, Clin II, Clin III: Organizes work, delegates, and supervises others (RN, LPN, Care Partner, Unit Secretary, etc.) in carrying out assignments.
Additional Position Requirements
  • Clin I, Clin II, Clin III: Clinicians work all shifts, weekends, and holidays. Shift rotation and schedule set with Nurse Manager or Practice Manager.
  • Schedules, including shift rotations and hours, may be adjusted to meet unit needs.

  • As appropriate based on unit assignment.
Physical Requirements
  • Lifting 20‑50 lbs.
  • Exposure to potentially hazardous and infectious substances.
  • Prolonged standing, prolonged sitting, frequent bending, walking, climbing stairs or ladder, reaching overhead, repetitive motion.
  • Strong recall, reasoning, problem solving, hearing, clear speech, legible writing, reading, logical thinking.
  • Ability to handle a fast‑paced environment, steady pace, multiple priorities, frequent and intense customer interactions, noisy environment.
