Overview

The Alvin J. Siteman Cancer Center at Barnes-Jewish Hospital and Washington University School of Medicine is an international leader in cancer treatment, research, prevention, education and community outreach. It is the only cancer center in Missouri and within a 240-mile radius of St. Louis to hold the prestigious Comprehensive Cancer Center designation from the National Cancer Institute and membership in the National Comprehensive Cancer Network. Parent institutions Barnes-Jewish Hospital and Washington University School of Medicine also are nationally recognized, with U.S. News & World Report consistently ranking the hospital and medical school among the nation's elite.

Division 7800 ICU is an Oncology designated 25-bed Intensive Care Unit. 10 beds are designated for oncology and bone marrow transplant patients. We provide care to critically ill patients with oncology, bone marrow transplant diagnoses, and patients who have had surgical interventions requiring ICU care. Care of high acuity critically ill patients includes high complexity interventions serving patients of the Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT), Oncology, and Surgical services. The presence of a multitude of services provides broad experiences for the nurse. Care is coordinated by a multidisciplinary team including oncology nurses, attending physicians, fellows, advanced practice nurses, physician assistants, case managers, social workers, spiritual care, pharmacy, and psycho-social support.

Professional nursing growth and development are encouraged and supported by programs such as the Nursing Resident Program (NRP) for new graduate nurses, the Career Ladder Program, Mock CODEs, and various educational opportunities with attending physicians, along with preparation for certifications like CCRN, OCN, and BMTNC.

Role Purpose

Provides direct patient care activities including assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation, and evaluation within the guidelines of the standards of nursing care.

Responsibilities
  • Promotes patient and family-centered care in a healing environment. Educates patients and their families on managing their illness or injury, including post-treatment home care needs and medication administration.
  • Participates in activities that promote patient safety, quality, and regulatory compliance. Engages in professional development.
  • Develops, implements, and documents individual plans of care with defined goals in collaboration with the interprofessional team and the patient, family, or caregiver, ensuring communication across the continuum of care.
  • Uses critical nursing skills to assess and evaluate physical, psychosocial, and emotional needs according to standards of care. Considers patient preferences, values, emotional, spiritual, cultural, and population-specific needs.
  • This is a safety-sensitive position requiring constant alertness and safe work practices.
