Job summary

Sentara Obici Hospital in Suffolk, VA is seeking an RN to join the Surgical Short Stay (SSU) Observation Unit on the night shift. This role offers flexi/PRN hours and a 7p–7a schedule in a well-supported, magnet-designated hospital environment.

The unit handles observation, post-procedural monitoring, and short-term treatments. Nurses discharge approximately 6–8 patients per shift with a 1:5–1:6 nurse-to-patient ratio, in a collaborative team setting.

Qualifications

• RN licensure required in the state of practice.
• BSN preferred, BSN/MSN encouraged for advancement.
• BLS certification within 90 days of hire.
• Experience in acute care or med/surg areas preferred.

Responsibilities

• Provide nursing care in the SSU Observation Unit.
• Monitor post-procedural patients and manage short-stay care.
• Collaborate with physicians, unit coordinators and preceptors.
• Support patient discharge planning and education.

Sentara Obici Hospital is seeking a Registered Nurse (RN) to join our Surgical Short Stay (SSU) Observation Unit!

Hours: Flexi/PRN - Nights 7p to 7a

About the Unit

The Observation/Short Stay Unit is an 18-bed department that specializes in observation, post-procedural monitoring, and short-term treatments, including TIA workups, stress tests, and radiology procedures. The maximum stay is typically two days per patient. Registered nurses can expect between 6 and 8 patient discharges per shift, with a nurse-to-patient ratio of approximately 1:5 to 1:6. The unit is supported by a highly skilled team of unit coordinators, educators, and a nurse manager. It benefits from low staff turnover and a strong culture of collaboration. Additional PCT staff are available to assist with ambulation and patient care. This well-supported team is ideal for both new graduate nurses and experienced Registered Nurses looking to expand their skills.
