- Shift: Rotating Days/Nights (2 x12-hour shifts)
The CVICU is a 24-bed, high-acuity unit located in Falls Church, VA, specializing in the care of patients post-cardiac and vascular surgery, heart and lung transplant, advanced heart failure, and other complex diagnoses requiring intensive monitoring and life-saving interventions. Clinical Excellence and Real-Time Support
- Dedicated Charge Nurse: Always out of patient assignments to lead clinical operations, support staff, and ensure high reliability throughout the shift.
- Advanced Resource RN: Device-trained and available on every shift to provide high-acuity support (ECMO, IABP, Impella, CRRT), cover lunches, assist with admissions, and serve as an in-unit mentor.
- Mid-Shift RNs and Clinical Technicians: Surgical throughput is supported with a dedicated mid-shift RNs and two CTs per shift to ensure optimal staffing coverage, workflow balance, and patient safety.
- Full-Time Clinical Educator: Provides onboarding, individualized learning pathways, certification preparation (e.g., CCRN), and hands-on training.
- Mentorship & Fellowship Support: Structured fellowship programs support nurses new to critical care, and experienced RNs are encouraged to grow through preceptorship, charge roles, and leadership pathways.
- Support for Clinical Ladder Advancement: Engagement in shared governance, quality projects, and continuing education are celebrated and supported.
- Interdisciplinary Rounds: Daily collaboration with providers, pharmacists, therapists, and case management ensures holistic, coordinated care.
- Respectful, Inclusive Culture: We maintain a psychologically safe environment where every voice matters and teamwork are foundational to our success.
- Recognition Culture: From shout-outs to clinical awards, we ensure excellence is not just expected—but celebrated.
- High-Acuity Specialty Care: Care includes immediate post-operative management for CABG, valve replacements, TEVAR/EVAR, ECMO patients, heart/lung transplants, and more.
- Innovative Practice Environment: Nurses have access to emerging technologies and work alongside nationally recognized surgeons and intensivists.
- Experience: Minimum 1 year of critical care experience or successful completion of a critical care fellowship
- Education: BSN required (ADN accepted with agreement to complete BSN within 5 years)
- Certifications: BLS (required), ACLS (within 6 months of hire)
- Licensure: RN license in Virginia or compact-eligible
- 2 or more years of Cardiac ICU RN experience (CVICU or Cardiac ICU highly desired)
- Unit involvement (committees, charge RN, precepting)
