Job Description

LOCATION: Lancaster, PA

HOURS: Full-Time, 0.9 FTE (36 hours/week), Rotating Schedule. Weekend, holiday, and on-call rotation required per department guidelines.

POSITION SUMMARY: Assume responsibility and accountability as defined by the American Nurses Association standards of nursing practice. The Clinical Nurse 1 New to Practice/Apprentice is a newly licensed RN or RN with less than 15 months of experience demonstrating basic safe practice within the organizational professional practice model. Seeks guidance to integrate concepts, knowledge, skills, and attitudes to meet standards for competent professional nursing practice. Exhibits Penn Medicine’s experience standards, reflecting its mission, embedded in the professional practice competency domains.

The Clinical Nurse 1 New to Practice/Apprentice provides direct care to patients across all age groups, demonstrating competencies in Quality Improvement, Evidence-Based Practice, Leadership, Person and Family Centered Care, Professionalism, Safety, Teamwork, and Technology/Informatics. Works closely with the interprofessional team to coordinate care, focusing on individualized, culturally sensitive, and age-appropriate care. Requires consultation with experienced clinicians and benefits from feedback to grow in caring for complex patients. Must complete all Clinical Nurse 1 competencies and aims to advance to Clinical Nurse 2 within 18 months.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Incorporates Lancaster General Health mission, vision, and values into patient care planning.
  • Functions as an independent and team member as defined in the unit-based Plan for Provision of Care.
  • Performs assessments, evaluates progress, and adapts care plans based on data and recognized trends.
  • Analyzes assessment data to determine diagnoses and formulates age-appropriate, culturally, and ethically sensitive care plans.
  • Implements care knowledgeably, coordinating across disciplines and caregivers.
  • Provides leadership by communicating standards of care and supporting team members.
  • Demonstrates understanding and commitment to values of privacy, quality, respect, service, and teamwork.
  • Delegates and supervises staff appropriately, ensuring continuity of care and resource utilization.
  • Educates patients on healthy practices and treatments.
  • Enhances nursing practices through technology and quality initiatives.
  • Considers safety, effectiveness, and cost in planning and delivering care.
SECONDARY FUNCTIONS
  • Manages changing situations per protocols, coordinating with team members and documenting events.
  • Participates in process improvements to increase continuity and efficiency.
  • Completes mandatory education on age-specific needs and interpersonal skills.
  • Maintains a safe environment, complying with policies and reporting variances.
  • Projects pride in work through interactions with staff and patients.
  • Engages in continuous learning to develop skills and knowledge.
  • Supervises and mentors peers and subordinates to enhance practice and environment.
  • Participates in performance reviews, addressing issues and evaluating performance.
  • Participates in on-call duties as required.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Job Requirements

MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • RN Licensure issued by the PA Board of Nursing or a Temporary Practice Permit (must sit for NCLEX within 60 days).
  • BSN preferred; for Magnet positions, BSN or higher within three years of start date if started after 07/01/2020.
  • Graduate RNs must practice under supervision with a current temporary permit.
  • Successful completion of the Nurse Residency Program.
  • CPR Certification - American Heart Association Basic Life Support (required within 30 days of hire).
  • Labor and Delivery RNs must obtain RNC-OB or C-EFRM within 3 years of hire.
  • Good standing with Medicare, Medicaid, and other federal and state health programs.
PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT
WORKING CONDITIONS

Position involves exposure to biohazardous waste, bloodborne pathogens, and radioactive agents.
