Job Description

LOCATION: Lancaster, PA
HOURS: Full-Time, 0.9 FTE (36 hours/week), Rotating Schedule. Weekend, holiday, and on-call rotation required per department guidelines.

POSITION SUMMARY: Assume responsibility and accountability as defined by the American Nurses Association standards of nursing practice. The Clinical Nurse 1 New to Practice/Apprentice is a newly licensed RN or RN with less than 15 months of experience demonstrating basic safe practice within the organizational professional practice model. The role seeks guidance to integrate concepts, knowledge, skills, and attitudes to meet standards for competent professional nursing practice. The Clinical Nurse 1 exhibits Penn Medicine’s experience standards, reflecting its mission and embedded in professional practice competency domains.

The Clinical Nurse 1 is accountable for providing direct care to patients across all ages, demonstrating competencies in Continuous Quality Improvement, Evidence-Based Practice, Research, Leadership, Person and Family Centered Care, Professionalism, Safety, Teamwork, and Technology/Informatics.

This nurse works closely with the interprofessional team to coordinate care across the continuum, focusing on developing necessary knowledge and skills for individualized care considering physical, psychosocial, cultural, educational, safety, and age-related factors.

The role involves consulting with experienced clinicians, receiving feedback, and demonstrating growth in caring for complex patients. The nurse's practice impacts organizational goals and complies with regulatory standards. Completion of all Clinical Nurse 1 competencies is required, with advancement to Clinical Nurse 2 expected within 18 months.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Qualified individuals must perform duties including incorporating the Lancaster General Health mission into patient care, functioning as part of the healthcare team, performing assessments, analyzing data, formulating care plans, implementing care, providing leadership, educating patients, utilizing technology, and considering safety, effectiveness, and cost in planning care.

SECONDARY FUNCTIONS: These include managing changing situations, participating in process improvements, completing mandatory education, maintaining safety, projecting pride, seeking learning opportunities, supervising peers, participating in performance reviews, and other duties as assigned.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • RN Licensure issued by the PA Board of Nursing or a Temporary Practice Permit (must sit for NCLEX within 60 days).
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred; for Magnet positions, BSN or higher required within three years of placement.
  • Supervision required for graduate RNs with a temporary permit.
  • Completion of Nurse Residency Program required.
  • CPR Certification - AHA Basic Life Support within 30 days of hire.
  • Labor and Delivery RNs must obtain RNC-OB or C-EFRM within 3 years of hire.
  • Good standing with Medicare, Medicaid, and other federal and state programs.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Exposure to biohazardous waste, bloodborne pathogens, radioactive agents.
