Position Overview

The Registered Nurse (RN) in Medical/Surgical functions as a care provider within a multidisciplinary team responsible for delivering patient care through assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation, and evaluation. The RN integrates knowledge of patient age and cultural diversity into care, demonstrates effective time management, contributes to quality improvement initiatives, collaborates with other professionals, and supports the mission to provide physical and psychological support to patients and families.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to establish goals for discharge or ongoing care.
  2. Perform and document comprehensive patient assessments and develop current care plans.
  3. Identify patient education needs and provide tailored teaching.
  4. Administer medications safely in accordance with policies and regulations.
  5. Serve as a point of contact for care coordination across departments.
  6. Participate in quality improvement efforts and advocate for patient safety and well-being.

Licensing and Certification Requirements
  • Current RN license in the state of practice or covered by a compact agreement.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification; ACLS preferred or acceptable in lieu of BLS.
  • Optional but preferred certifications: Medical-Surgical Nursing (RN-BC), CCRN, PCCN, CMSRN, NIH Stroke Certification.
Educational and Experience Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (preferred).
  • Minimum of one year RN experience required; six months in an acute care hospital preferred.

Working Conditions

Expect periods of high stress, potential exposure to physical altercations, verbal abuse, hazardous substances, body fluids, and infectious materials. May involve working alone, using physical restraints, and working in noisy or bright environments.

Job Summary for Maryview Medical Center

The Med-Surg RN provides exceptional nursing care by assessing patient status, managing diverse medical and surgical cases, implementing interventions, developing care plans, and maintaining a safe environment.

Essential Functions
  • Collaborate with care team members
  • Monitor vital signs, administer IV medications, and assess patient conditions
  • Update and revise care plans to meet expected outcomes
  • Administer medications safely per policies
  • Perform other duties as assigned
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in nursing preferred
  • One year of RN experience required; six months in acute care preferred
Licensing & Certifications
  • Current RN license in the state of practice
