Summary of Primary Function/General Purpose of Position

The Registered Nurse (RN) in Medical/Surgical functions as a care provider within a multidisciplinary care team responsible for delivering patient care by utilizing the nursing process: assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation, and evaluation. The RN demonstrates knowledge of patient age and cultural diversity, manages time effectively, contributes to quality improvement, collaborates with other disciplines, and supports the mission to provide physical and psychological support to patients and families.

Essential Job Functions
  1. Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to establish care goals and strategies for discharge or ongoing care.
  2. Perform and document comprehensive patient assessments.
  3. Maintain current nursing care plans for all assigned patients.
  4. Identify patient learning needs and provide individualized education.
  5. Administer medications safely according to policies and state regulations.
  6. Serve as a care coordinator and patient safety advocate, participating in quality improvement initiatives.
  7. Act as a patient advocate in collaboration with spiritual care, palliative care, and ethics teams.

Licensing/Certification
  • Current RN license in the practicing state or covered by a compact agreement.
  • BLS certification (required upon hire); ACLS acceptable in lieu of BLS.
  • Preferred: Medical-Surgical Nursing Certification (RN-BC), CCRN, PCCN, CMSRN, NIH Stroke Certification.
Education
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (preferred).
Experience
  • Minimum one year of RN experience (required).
  • Six months RN experience in an acute care hospital setting (preferred).

  • Assign patient care based on staff skills and scope of practice.
  • Provide education and facilitate learning for staff and patients.
  • Perform comprehensive assessments and develop care plans.
  • Evaluate and revise care plans based on patient response.

Working Conditions

The Med-Surg RN is responsible for delivering exceptional nursing care by assessing patient status, providing care for medical and surgical diagnoses, implementing interventions, developing care plans, and ensuring a safe environment.

  2. Assess vital signs, administer IV medications, and evaluate patient condition.
  3. Update and revise care plans to meet outcomes.
  4. Administer medications safely.
  5. Perform other duties as assigned.
Education
  • Bachelor’s degree in nursing (preferred).
Work Experience
  • One year of RN experience (required).
  • Six months in an acute care setting (preferred).
Licensing & Certifications
  • Current RN licensure.
  • BLS certification (preferred upon hire); ACLS acceptable.
