Summary
The Risk Manager (RM) is responsible for developing and managing the VA San Diego Healthcare System (VASDHS) Risk Management Program, supporting the mission, vision, and core values in accordance with regulatory agencies, VHA, Network, and facility requirements.
Qualifications Basic Requirements:
- English Language Proficiency
- In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7403(f), no person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless proficient in basic written and spoken English.
- Graduate of an accredited school of professional nursing, approved by the appropriate accrediting agency such as ACEN or CCNE.
- OR enrolled in a master's level bridge program in nursing with coursework equivalent to a bachelor's degree; may become registered with a state licensing board prior to completing the program.
- Upon obtaining a State license, appointment may be on a temporary basis, with potential for permanent appointment after graduation.
- Foreign nursing graduates must possess a current, full, active, and unrestricted registration; foreign education higher than an associate degree requires degree equivalency validation.
- Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in the U.S. or its territories.
- Graduate Nurse Technician (GNT) exception: candidates meeting education requirements but lacking licensure may be appointed temporarily while pursuing licensure.
- Grade determinations and scope of practice vary by education and experience level, detailed in the standard assessment.
- Preferred experience includes at least one year of current risk management experience, with skills in legal interaction, claims review, data analysis, and report preparation.
- Additional qualifications may include a Juris Doctor, Risk Management Certificate, or Health Law Certificate.
Duties
- Serve as a subject matter expert in risk management, collaborating with service chiefs to design and implement the program.
- Maintain expertise through ongoing education and training.
- Provide advice, support, and policy guidance to staff to reduce risk and improve safety.
- Develop and implement evidence-based approaches to enhance care quality and safety.
- Analyze data to evaluate program effectiveness and identify improvements.
- Ensure compliance with policies, standards, and regulations.
- Lead quality improvement initiatives, disseminate lessons learned, and serve as a risk management resource.
- Consult on high-risk situations, conduct training, and manage the tort claim process.
- Investigate claims, identify trends, and recommend corrective actions.
- Assist leadership in setting priorities and liaise with patient safety and peer review committees.
- Conduct annual program assessments, participate in regulatory surveys, and monitor external review follow-up.
