The RN practices professional nursing as a registered nurse within the legal and ethical framework established by the Connecticut Nurse Practice Act, American Nurses Association Scope and Standards for Nursing Practice, ANA Code of Ethics for Nurses and the YNHHS Professional Practice Model. • Establishes and maintains a therapeutic relationship with the patient and family, encompassing an understanding and integration of cultural and diversity considerations into practice.

Responsibilities

1. Standards of Practice: RN practice is guided by the ANA Scope and Standards of Practice (2015). The Standards of Practice describe a competent level of nursing care as demonstrated by utilizing the nursing process components of assessment, diagnosis, outcomes identification, planning, implementation, and evaluation. The RN conducts assessment, analyzes data, identifies outcomes, develops and modifies care plans, implements care, coordinates transitions, promotes health and safety, and evaluates progress.
2. Standards of Professional Performance: The ANA Standards of Professional Performance (2015) describe competent behavior in ethics, culturally congruent practice, communication, collaboration, leadership, education, evidence-based practice and research, quality, professional practice evaluation, resource utilization, and environmental health. The RN is expected to engage in these activities, practicing ethically, respecting diversity, communicating effectively, collaborating, leading, seeking knowledge, integrating evidence, contributing to quality, evaluating practice, utilizing resources appropriately, and practicing environmentally safely.

Qualifications

Education: Graduation from an accredited school of nursing. BSN preferred. All newly hired RNs must have current BCLS certification or obtain it within one month of hire.

Experience: All RNs are encouraged to advance through the SPIRE clinical advancement program.

Licensure: Licensed and currently registered in Connecticut. Clinical specialty certification is highly encouraged.

Special Skills: Same as above; all RNs are encouraged to advance through SPIRE program.

Physical Demands: Prolonged standing, walking, use of sight, hearing, touch. Exposure to infectious diseases, physical, mental, emotional illnesses, end-of-life conditions. Moderate stress and injury risk. Must assist with patient handling ranging from 5 to 300 pounds.
