Job description

Registered Nurse-PRN

Carolina Dunes Behavioral Health is seeking a Registered Nurse (PRN) to provide nursing care to patients in Leland, North Carolina.

Roles and Responsibilities
  • Provides and coordinates care by assessing physical and behavioral health needs of patients, develops and implements nursing care plans, maintains medical records, and educates patients and families about various conditions while ensuring patient safety at all times.
  • Assesses patient status on an ongoing basis and documents gathered information.
  • Ensures nursing treatment plans are specific to assessed needs; initial treatment plan completed upon admission.
  • Takes physicians’ orders (verbal or via telephone) accurately, documents appropriately, and transcribes orders per policy.
  • Accurately administers medications per ordered note and documents controlled substance count; adjusts medications under provider supervision and monitors lab results.
  • Notifies physicians of significant changes in status such as detox difficulties, medical emergencies, or medication response changes.
  • Supervises self‑administration of medications using patient identification safety initiative; documents and reports effects of scheduled and PRN medications.
  • Maintains accountability for medication administration, recording, control, and security, including narcotics.
  • Completes admission and discharge processes efficiently and accurately as directed.
  • Confers regularly with the treatment team (nurses, therapists, program managers, physician) regarding patient care; attends unit activities such as therapy groups, family meetings, staffing meetings, etc.
  • Provides education/explanation to patients, families, and co‑workers regarding medication usage, common side effects, patient rights, and other topics necessary for optimal care.
  • Monitors patient acuity, census, staffing needs, and makes staffing coverage arrangements as needed following guidelines.
  • Ensures thorough, accurate documentation for all patients each shift and completes patient assignment sheets daily; carries out tasks as assigned.
  • Provides thorough reports to incoming staff, supervisors, and physicians.
  • Provides coverage in emergency services as needed.
Education / Experience / Skill Requirements
  • Graduation from an approved/accredited school of nursing.
  • One or more years of nursing experience in a clinical area of service preferred.
  • Experience in behavioral health, psychiatric, or addiction recovery environment preferred.
Licenses / Designations / Certifications
  • Valid current RN license from the state or from a compact state, where applicable.
  • Certified in Psychiatric Nursing preferred.
  • CPR and de‑escalation and restraint certification required (training available upon hire).
  • First aid may be required based on state or facility requirements.
