Job summary

Child Health Associates is hiring a Pediatric Registered Nurse (RN) to join our outpatient pediatric care team in the Troy/Novi, Michigan offices. The RN will work closely with physicians, nurses, and staff to deliver safe, family-centered care to infants, children, and adolescents.

The ideal candidate has a BSN, an MI RN license, CPR/BLS certification, and strong communication and clinical assessment skills.

Responsibilities

Founded in 1975, Child Health Associates, P.C. (CHA) has a long history of providing high-quality, compassionate medical care to children and families throughout the Detroit metropolitan area. Our board-certified pediatricians provide comprehensive pediatric care from our offices in Troy and Novi, Michigan.

At CHA, our Registered Nurses are an integral part of the care team. They work closely with physicians, fellow nurses, medical assistants, and administrative staff to provide safe, efficient, family-centered care to infants, children, adolescents, and young adults.

We are looking for a compassionate, dependable, organized, and team-oriented Registered Nurse who demonstrates strong clinical judgment, excellent communication skills, and a commitment to providing an exceptional experience for our patients and families.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Successful candidates will perform responsibilities including, but not limited to:

Patient Triage & Clinical Care

• Triage patient and parent/caregiver calls regarding illnesses, symptoms, behavioral concerns, medications, and other health concerns using established pediatric protocols and sound clinical judgment.
• Provide appropriate home-care recommendations, education, and guidance regarding illness management, symptom monitoring, prevention, and when additional medical evaluation is needed.
• Recognize changes in a patient's condition and appropriately elevate clinical concerns to a physician or other provider.
• Provide in-office patient and parent education, including topics such as EpiPen use, inhaler and spacer use, medication administration, wound care, and other clinical needs.
• Administer medications, vaccines, and other treatments as appropriate and within the RN scope of practice.
• Perform venipuncture on patients in the office.
• Assist physicians and other clinical team members with patient care and procedures as needed.

Patient Education & Preventive Care

• Educate patients and families regarding health maintenance, preventive care, immunizations, medications, and healthy development.
• Assist with identifying and tracking patients who are overdue for well-child visits, immunizations, or other recommended care.
• Send appropriate reminders and perform outreach regarding well visits, vaccines, follow-up care, and other preventive health needs.
• Assist with practice initiatives related to vaccine compliance and preventive care.

Follow-Up & Care Coordination

• Perform appropriate follow-up with patients and families after hospitalizations, Emergency Department visits, Urgent Care visits, or other significant medical events.
• Review and follow up on laboratory results, diagnostic reports, and other clinical information in collaboration with the patient's physician.
• Assist with scheduling laboratory testing, imaging, and specialist appointments when needed.
• Create referrals to Care Management and other services based on physician/provider recommendations.
• Coordinate orders and referrals for services such as PT, OT, Speech Therapy, ABA Therapy, home medical equipment, phototherapy/bilirubin blankets, and other services as appropriate.
• Communicate and coordinate care with specialists, hospitals, pharmacies, insurance companies, schools, and other healthcare or community organizations as appropriate.

Medication Management

• Review and process medication refill requests according to established practice protocols and physician guidance.
• Provide medication-related education to patients and caregivers.
• Complete and submit medication and treatment prior authorization requests to insurance companies as needed.
• Communicate medication-related questions or concerns to the appropriate physician/provider.

Forms, Documentation & Administrative Nursing Responsibilities

• Complete health appraisal forms, school/daycare/camp forms, medication authorization forms, sports forms, work/school excuses, FMLA paperwork, 504 documentation, and other health-related documentation as appropriate.
• Review and process incoming clinical faxes, patient portal messages, telephone encounters, and electronic health record tasks.
• Fax or securely transmit medical documentation as requested and permitted.
• Assist with appropriate transfer of medical information to specialists or new healthcare providers in accordance with practice procedures.
• Document patient care, telephone encounters, education, interventions, and communications accurately and promptly in the electronic health record.
• Maintain patient confidentiality and comply with HIPAA and all applicable privacy and security requirements.

Teamwork & Workflow

• Participate in assigned nursing workflow rotations, which may include phones/triage, forms, faxes, clinical tasks, Care Management, patient messages, and other nursing responsibilities.
• Communicate proactively with team members regarding patient needs, workload, outstanding responsibilities and tasks requiring additional assistance.
• Work collaboratively with fellow RNs and other staff to ensure patient care responsibilities are appropriately distributed and completed in a timely manner.
• Assist other members of the clinical team when assigned responsibilities are completed or when patient care needs require additional support.
• Remain flexible as assignments, patient volume, and clinical priorities change throughout the day.
• Maintain an organized and efficient workspace.
• Participate in staff meetings, training, quality improvement initiatives and continuing education as requested.
• Follow all CHA policies and procedures related to patient safety, infection prevention, medication administration, vaccine storage and handling, documentation, and clinical practice.
• Perform additional duties as assigned and within the employee's applicable scope of practice.

Qualifications & Requirements

Required

• Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) from an accredited nursing program.
• Current and unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) license in the State of Michigan.
• Current CPR/BLS certification appropriate for the position.

• Strong computer skills and ability to effectively utilize an electronic health record and other healthcare technology.

Preferred

• Previous pediatric nursing experience.
• Previous outpatient, primary care, or ambulatory nursing experience.
• Experience with pediatric telephone triage.
• Experience administering pediatric and adolescent immunizations.
• Experience with care coordination or Care Management.

Work Environment & Physical Requirements

This position is performed primarily in a busy outpatient pediatric medical practice and involves frequent interaction with infants, children, adolescents, parents, caregivers, physicians, and other staff.

The position may require prolonged periods of sitting, standing, walking, and computer use, as well as bending, reaching and assisting with routine patient care activities. Employees must be able to perform the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.
