Job description

Overview

To be part of our organization, every employee should understand and share in the YNHHS Vision, support our Mission, and live our Values. These values - integrity, patient-centered, respect, accountability, and compassion - must guide what we do, as individuals and professionals, every day.

As an integral member of the Yale New Haven Health System (YNHHS) healthcare team, the Registered Professional Nurse (RN) upholds the YNHHS mission, vision, values, and strategic initiatives to provide the highest level of patient-centered care. The RN practices professional nursing within the legal and ethical framework established by the Connecticut Nurse Practice Act, American Nurses Association Scope and Standards for Nursing Practice, ANA Code of Ethics for Nurses, and the YNHHS Professional Practice Model. The role of the RN is exemplified by leadership, delegation, collaboration, effective communication, and ensuring quality outcomes.

YNHHS nurses practice within a framework outlined in our professional practice model, which states, "Achieving outcomes through Autonomy and Accountability." We value Nursing Professional Governance and use evidence and data to support our practice with the patient and family always at the center. The RN provides care that:

  • Establishes and maintains a therapeutic relationship with the patient and family, integrating cultural diversity into practice
  • Communicates and collaborates effectively with the patient, family, and healthcare team members
  • Respects the patient's values, preferences, expressed needs, and knowledge of their healthcare situation in holistic data collection, outcome formulation, and evaluation
Responsibilities
  1. Standards of Practice: RN practice is guided by the ANA Scope and Standards of Practice (2015), which describe competent nursing care through assessment, diagnosis, outcomes identification, planning, implementation, and evaluation. The RN collects pertinent data, analyzes assessment data, identifies outcomes, develops and modifies care plans, implements identified plans, coordinates care, employs health promotion strategies, and evaluates progress.
  2. Standards of Professional Performance: The RN demonstrates competent behavior in ethics, culturally congruent practice, communication, collaboration, leadership, education, evidence-based practice, resource utilization, and environmental health. The RN is accountable for their professional actions, practices ethically, promotes diversity and inclusion, communicates effectively, collaborates with stakeholders, leads within their practice setting, seeks ongoing knowledge, integrates evidence into practice, contributes to quality, evaluates practice, utilizes resources responsibly, and practices in an environmentally safe manner.
Qualifications

Education: Graduation from an accredited nursing school; BSN preferred. All new RNs must have current BCLS certification or obtain it within one month of hire.

Experience: All RNs are encouraged to advance through the SPIRE clinical advancement program.

Licensure: Licensed and currently registered in Connecticut. Certification in a clinical specialty is highly encouraged.

Special Skills: Basic RN responsibilities; encouraged to pursue further professional development through SPIRE.

Physical Demands

Requires prolonged standing, walking, and use of sight, hearing, and touch. Exposure to infectious diseases, physical, mental, and emotional illness, end-of-life conditions, and death. Moderate stress and injury risk. Must be able to assist in moving patients weighing from 5 to 300 pounds.

Additional Information

Critical care or pediatrics experience preferred. 9 months of acute care experience required (excluding orientation). BLS required; PALS and ACLS preferred.
