Job summary

Deerfield Academy is seeking a part-time Registered Nurse to support the D.S. Chen Health and Wellness Center during the academic year. Shifts are 4 pm–8 pm Monday through Thursday with weekend availability (Saturday and Sunday 4 pm–8 pm).

Reporting to the Director of Nursing, the nurse will provide comprehensive health care to students and employees in a clinic and infirmary setting, adhering to professional standards and HIPAA policies.

Qualifications

• Associates Degree in Nursing is required; a Bachelor’s is preferred.
• Current Massachusetts RN license is required; BLS certification is required.
• Strong communication and decision-making capabilities are essential.
• Ability to work independently and in a team environment is needed.

Responsibilities

• Provide excellent, individual health care and education to Deerfield students and employees.
• Follow orders per physician or NP and nursing standards of practice.
• Recognize emergencies and initiate intervention; arrange hospital transfer if needed.
• Maintain high nursing care while following center policies and safety standards.
• Show professional, compassionate care toward students, families, and staff.
• Comply with HIPAA policies and regulations.
• Document thoroughly in the electronic medical record system.
• Draw blood, call in prescriptions, dispense meds, and administer immunizations.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Job description

The D.S. Chen Health and Wellness Center serves the Deerfield Academy community and we are seeking a Registered Nurse for a part-time position during the academic year. Hours needed include daily shifts: Monday through Thursday 4 pm - 8 pm, with weekend availability Saturday and Sunday 4pm – 8pm.

General Summary

Reporting to the Director of Nursing, the staff nurse provides health care to students and employees during the academic year, consistent with current, professional nursing practice standards and the policies and procedures of the Health Center.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

• Provide excellent, individual health care and education to Deerfield students and employees.
• Follow written and/or verbal orders per the Health Center Physician (MD) or Nurse Practitioner (NP) as per nursing standard of practice
• Independently recognize emergency situations and initiate appropriate intervention and treatment, sending the student to the hospital as appropriate and calling for extra help as needed
• Maintain a high level of nursing care, following professional nursing standards and abiding by the Health Center’s policies, procedures and Standing Orders with emphasis on clinical safety, quality and effective communication.
• Provide a professional, compassionate approach towards all students, their families, employees, and all others involved with the health and well-being of the student
• Comply with all HIPAA policies and regulations
• Document thoroughly and appropriately in the Health Center’s electronic medical record system
• Draw blood, calls in prescriptions, dispense medications, administer immunizations and perform other medical procedures and tests as deemed necessary, and as ordered by the MD/NP
• Other duties as assigned

Job Specifications

• Associates Degree in Nursing required, Bachelor’s Degree preferred, from an accredited school
• 1 - 3 years clinical nursing experience, preferably with adolescents in a health care setting
• Valid Massachusetts RN license
• Current BLS certification
• Effective communication and decision-making capabilities required
• Ability to be flexible required
• Ability to work independently as well as in a team environment
• Ability to work with a wide range of people in a diplomatic and professional manner
• Ability to use a computer, MS Office suite, and EHR system

Physical Demands

• Close visual acuity to view a computer terminal and reports

Working Conditions

The nurse is in an outpatient medical clinic as well as an inpatient infirmary. Occasional exposure to biohazardous materials and body waste.
