Job summary

Deerfield Academy is seeking a part-time Registered Nurse for the D.S. Chen Health and Wellness Center during the academic year. Shifts are Monday–Thursday 4 pm–8 pm with weekend availability 4 pm–8 pm.

The RN reports to the Director of Nursing and provides health care to students and employees following professional nursing standards and Health Center policies.

Qualifications

• Associates Degree in Nursing required; Bachelor’s Degree preferred.
• Massachusetts RN license and current BLS required.
• Experience with adolescents in health care setting preferred.

Responsibilities

• Provide health care and education to Deerfield students and employees.
• Follow orders per MD/NP and nursing standards of practice.
• Recognize emergencies and initiate intervention with appropriate referral.
• Maintain nursing care according to policies, procedures and safety standards.
• Document in the health center’s EMR and ensure HIPAA compliance.
• Administer immunizations, draw blood, and dispense medications as ordered.
• Provide compassionate care and work collaboratively with staff.

Job description

The D.S. Chen Health and Wellness Center serves the Deerfield Academy community and we are seeking a Registered Nurse for a part-time position during the academic year. Hours needed include daily shifts: Monday through Thursday 4 pm - 8 pm, with weekend availability Saturday and Sunday 4pm – 8pm.

General Summary

Reporting to the Director of Nursing, the staff nurse provides health care to students and employees during the academic year, consistent with current, professional nursing practice standards and the policies and procedures of the Health Center.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

• Provide excellent, individual health care and education to Deerfield students and employees.
• Follow written and/or verbal orders per the Health Center Physician (MD) or Nurse Practitioner (NP) as per nursing standard of practice
• Independently recognize emergency situations and initiate appropriate intervention and treatment, sending the student to the hospital as appropriate and calling for extra help as needed
• Maintain a high level of nursing care, following professional nursing standards and abiding by the Health Center’s policies, procedures and Standing Orders with emphasis on clinical safety, quality and effective communication.
• Provide a professional, compassionate approach towards all students, their families, employees, and all others involved with the health and well-being of the student
• Comply with all HIPAA policies and regulations
• Document thoroughly and appropriately in the Health Center’s electronic medical record system
• Draw blood, calls in prescriptions, dispense medications, administer immunizations and perform other medical procedures and tests as deemed necessary, and as ordered by the MD/NP
• Other duties as assigned

Job Specifications

• Associates Degree in Nursing required, Bachelor’s Degree preferred, from an accredited school
• 1 - 3 years clinical nursing experience, preferably with adolescents in a health care setting
• Valid Massachusetts RN license
• Current BLS certification
• Effective communication and decision‑making capabilities required
• Ability to be flexible required
• Ability to work independently as well as in a team environment
• Ability to work with a wide range of people in a diplomatic and professional manner
• Ability to use a computer, MS Office suite, and EHR system
• Demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusion and to serving the needs of a diverse community
• Ability to manage, and sensitivity to, highly confidential information

Physical Demands

• Close visual acuity to view a computer terminal and reports
• Ability to stoop, crouch, kneel, reach, feel and hear
• Ability to frequently bend and lift

• Ability to occasionally lift or move up to 50 lbs.
• Ability to occasionally push/pull up to 200 lbs.

Working Conditions

The nurse is in an outpatient medical clinic as well as an inpatient infirmary. Occasional exposure to biohazardous materials and body waste.
