Job description

Summary

The Durham VA Healthcare System is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Registered Nurse Manager to serve within our Surgical Specialty Clinics. The candidate should demonstrate leadership, innovative management approaches for complex patient care, and be accountable for managing patient care, human, fiscal, and material resources, as well as the overall environment of the unit. The goal is to ensure the highest quality of care and a safe therapeutic environment.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:

  • U.S. Citizenship; non-citizens may be appointed if qualified citizens are unavailable, per VA policy.
  • English proficiency, both written and spoken, in accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7403(f).
  • Graduate of an accredited school of professional nursing; accreditation by ACEN or CCNE at the time of program completion.
  • For those attending a master's-level bridge program in nursing, completion of coursework equivalent to a bachelor's degree is required, with eligibility to become registered prior to program completion.
  • Foreign nursing graduates must possess current, unrestricted registration; degree equivalency validation may be required.
  • Current, full, active, and unrestricted RN registration in a U.S. state, territory, or D.C.
  • Graduate Nurse Technician (GNT) exception: candidates without licensure may be appointed temporarily while pursuing licensure.

Grade Determinations: The standard details the scope, education, and experience required for each nursing level (Nurse I-III). The actual grade may vary based on qualifications and experience.

Preferred Qualifications: MSN or BSN with a master's in a health-related field; certifications such as ANCC for Ambulatory Care Nursing and Nurse Executive are preferred. The full performance level is Nurse III.

Physical and Other Requirements: The position involves long periods of walking, standing, lifting, and other physical activities, with specific visual and auditory requirements, and the ability to work effectively in stressful situations.

Duties
  • Manage care for patients with chronic conditions across various specialties, including cardiology, dermatology, neurology, and more.
  • Function as an ambulatory care nurse supporting physicians and advanced practice providers.
  • Ensure comprehensive primary and specialty care services, including gender-specific care for veterans.
  • Accountable for daily operations, care coordination, patient flow, quality assurance, staff leadership, and team collaboration.
  • Engage in quality improvement activities, staff development, and maintaining survey readiness.
  • Ensure compliance with medical equipment standards, facilitate teamwork, and promote positive patient and staff outcomes.
