As an integral member of the Yale New Haven Health System (YNHHS) healthcare team, the Registered Professional Nurse (RN) upholds the YNHHS mission, vision, values and strategic initiatives to provide the highest level of patient centered care. The RN practices professional nursing within the legal and ethical framework established by the Connecticut Nurse Practice Act, American Nurses Association Scope and Standards for Nursing Practice, ANA Code of Ethics for Nurses, and the YNHHS Professional Practice Model. The role of the RN includes leadership, delegation, collaboration, effective communication, and ensuring quality outcomes. YNHHS nurses work within our professional practice model, which emphasizes 'Achieving outcomes through Autonomy and Accountability'. We promote Nursing Professional Governance and utilize evidence and data to support our practice with the patient and family at the center.

Responsibilities
  1. Standards of Practice: The RN's practice is guided by the ANA Scope and Standards of Practice (2015), covering assessment, diagnosis, outcomes identification, planning, implementation, and evaluation. The RN collects data, analyzes it to determine diagnoses, sets expected outcomes, develops and modifies care plans, implements and coordinates care, promotes health and safety, and evaluates progress.
  2. Standards of Professional Performance: The RN adheres to the ANA Standards of Professional Performance (2015), demonstrating competence in ethics, culturally congruent practice, communication, collaboration, leadership, education, evidence-based practice, quality improvement, professional practice evaluation, resource utilization, and environmental health. The RN practices ethically, respects cultural diversity, communicates effectively, collaborates with stakeholders, demonstrates leadership, seeks ongoing education, integrates research, contributes to quality practice, evaluates practice, utilizes resources responsibly, and practices in an environmentally safe manner.
Qualifications

Education: Graduation from an accredited nursing school; BSN preferred. Current BCLS certification required within one month of hire.

Experience: All RNs are encouraged to advance through the SPIRE clinical program.

Licensure: Valid RN license in Connecticut; clinical specialty certification encouraged.

Physical Demands

Requires prolonged standing, walking, and use of senses. Exposure to infectious diseases and emotional stress. Ability to assist with patient handling, including lifting up to 300 pounds.
