Job summary

IU Health Paoli is seeking a PRN night shift RN for Labor & Delivery, Postpartum, and Newborn Nursery to join a high-performing maternity care team. The role emphasizes caring for antepartum, labor, postpartum, and newborn patients with strong teamwork and adherence to IU Health values.

The position requires an active RN license in Indiana, at least 1 year of RN experience, and a nationally accredited nursing program.

Qualifications

  • Requires 1 year RN experience.
  • ASN required; BSN preferred.
  • Active RN license in Indiana or NLC license.
  • Graduation from a nationally accredited nursing program.
  • BLS certification by AHA.
  • Other advanced Life Support may be required per unit.

Responsibilities

  • Provide labor & delivery, postpartum and newborn care per unit standards.
  • Monitor fetal status and perform routine newborn assessments.
  • Support breastfeeding and family education.
  • Stabilize emergencies and participate in team drills.
  • Crosstrain to medical-surgical unit as needed.

Labor & Delivery Skills:
  • Low-risk labor assessment and management
  • Fetal monitoring (intermittent auscultation and basic EFM interpretation)
  • Sterile vaginal exams
  • Labor support techniques (positioning, coping, hydrotherapy, etc.)
  • Identifying early signs of labor complications and initiating provider notification
  • Assisting with inductions and augmentations (e.g., Foley balloon, Cytotec, low-dose Pitocin protocols)
  • Assisting with spontaneous vaginal deliveries
  • Immediate postpartum recovery for birthing parents
  • Grief support and bereavement care when needed.
Postpartum:
  • Focused postpartum assessments: fundus, lochia, pain, perineum, bladder, vitals
  • Postpartum hemorrhage recognition and first-line interventions
  • Breastfeeding support and safe formula feeding education
  • Management of common postpartum needs (pain control, mobility, peri-care)
  • Post-operative cesarean section care.
  • Maternal mental health screening (e.g., EPDS)
Newborn Nursery:
  • Comprehensive newborn assessments
  • Routine newborn care: meds (Vitamin K, Hep B, erythromycin), baths, weights
  • Thermoregulation and blood sugar monitoring
  • Feeding support for breastfeeding and formula-fed infants
  • Jaundice screening
  • Newborn screening coordination (CCHD, hearing, heelstick)
  • Safe sleep education for families
  • Stabilization of late preterm or borderline infants before transfer if needed
Emergency Management Skills
  • Neonatal stabilization prior to transport (NRP-level skills)
  • Maternal emergency stabilization (PE, eclampsia, hemorrhage, sepsis)
  • Shoulder dystocia support and documentation
  • Initial response to OB traumas before transfer
  • Participation in mock codes and drills (PPH, neonatal resuscitation, maternal code)
Cross Training & General
  • Caring for antepartum patients for short-term observation.
  • Managing a mix of labor, postpartum, and newborn patients following AWHONN Safe Staffing Guidelines.
  • Crosstrain to Medical Surgical Unit

Qualifications
  • Requires 1 year RN experience.

  • Requires an Associates of Nursing (ASN); Bachelor of Nursing (BSN) preferred.

  • Requires an active Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of Indiana or an active Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC) RN license.

  • Requires that the RN has graduated from a nationally accredited nursing program.

  • Requires Basic Life Support certification through the AHA.

  • Other advanced Life Support certifications may be required per unit/department specialty according to patient care policies.
