Summary/Objective

ICU Nurse is responsible for providing specialized care to critically ill patients in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). This includes monitoring vital signs, administering medications, performing advanced clinical procedures, and collaborating with a multidisciplinary healthcare team to deliver high-quality care. The ICU Nurse is expected to provide compassionate care, assess patient needs, and ensure the safety and comfort of patients in a critical care setting.

Summary/Objective

ICU Nurse is responsible for providing specialized care to critically ill patients in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). This includes monitoring vital signs, administering medications, performing advanced clinical procedures, and collaborating with a multidisciplinary healthcare team to deliver high-quality care. The ICU Nurse is expected to provide compassionate care, assess patient needs, and ensure the safety and comfort of patients in a critical care setting.

Essential Functions

  • Continuously monitor and assess critically ill patients' conditions, including vital signs, laboratory results, and any changes in status with timely notification to provider.
  • Provide rapid intervention in response to changes in patient conditions, including initiating emergency procedures when necessary.
  • Assess patients’ physical, emotional, and psychological needs, ensuring comprehensive care.
  • Administer medications and treatments as prescribed, following proper protocols.
  • Assist with complex procedures such as intubation, catheterization, ventilator management, and other ICU-specific interventions.
  • Collaborate with the medical team to develop and implement individualized care plans.
  • Serve as a liaison between patients, families, and the healthcare team, offering information and emotional support.
  • Educate patients and their families on care procedures, recovery processes, and what to expect during the treatment and recovery phases.
  • Work with physicians, respiratory therapists, physical therapists, and other healthcare professionals to provide integrated care.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary rounds, contributing insights into patient status and treatment adjustments.
  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation of patient conditions, treatments, medications, and any other pertinent clinical information.
  • Ensure all documentation is in compliance with hospital policies and legal regulations.

Supervisory Responsibility

This position can be assigned as Charge Nurse at which time will supervise other RN’s, and Nursing students.

Work Environment

ICU consisting of work area and patient rooms that are well-lit and ventilated. May be exposed to communicable diseases. May experience traumatic and stressful situations.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. This position requires intermittent physical activity, endurance, ability to assist, lift and support patients. Duties regularly require standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, pushing, pulling and crouching as well as lifting and/or moving up to 50 lbs

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

This is a Full-time position with self-scheduling of three (3) 12-hour shifts per week. Work schedule does require weekends and holidays. Ability and willingness to work extra shifts that are outside the shift core hours are required when staffing shortages occur

No travel is expected for this position

Required Education, Experience And License

Graduate of an accredited school of nursing

Knowledge regarding the nursing process and its application, including the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of nursing care

Additional Eligibility Qualifications

Current RN nursing license from the State of Texas or Compact state, in pursuit of Texas license

Current BCLS, ACLS within 12 months of hire

Work Authorization/Security Clearance (if applicable)
