Job Description

The registered professional nurse is responsible for effectively carrying out the nursing process, which includes assessment, diagnosis, outcomes identification, planning, evaluation, documentation, and time management. The RN is accountable for quality communication, teamwork, and leadership/professionalism. Additionally, the RN directs, coordinates, and implements patient teaching, quality/safety initiatives, and the activities of other health team personnel while upholding professional nursing standards.

A Registered Nurse Per Diem (RN PD) is responsible for the care of the population assigned. The RN PD must complete yearly mandatory competencies, unit‑specific competencies identified by the Director/Designee, and the Professional Practice Ladder requirements, which include: assuming responsibility as Charge Nurse, initiating PI activity and department initiatives, communicating and sharing information with the Director/Designee and co‑workers from unit or hospital committees, and attending Valley Health‑paid education, seminars/conferences, workshops, or nursing articles. The portfolio must be current and submitted annually to the Director/Designee by March 1. The RN routinely solicits and validates patient/family satisfaction, participates in peer review for the unit, and develops a bulletin board or poster that provides educational information to staff, patients, and family members.

  • New hires must have American Heart Association (AHA) appropriate certification prior to completion of orientation.

  • Competent to provide care to patients utilizing the nursing process.

Secure
  • Eligibility to Test Letter (or interim phone primary source verification and documentation of same by VH Nurse Recruitment, while awaiting letter to come in the mail) from the Virginia Board of Nursing if a Virginia resident or Non‑Compact state resident. If resides in a Compact state other than Virginia, cannot commence employment as an RN I; must first secure home state’s Compact license with multi‑state privileges and may then commence RN employment as an RN I.
