Job Description

General Summary

• This role is considered the minimum for all nurses at UMMC with more than 12 months of experience. The nurse will be competent in required skills and fully participate in unit governance. They will practice and adhere to the guidelines specified in the UMMC Professional Nurse Job Charter. The nurse independently provides and coordinates care within a clinical specialty, serves as an effective member of the multidisciplinary team, and demonstrates the full range of nursing practice to improve patient outcomes, satisfaction, and cost-effectiveness. They are accountable to patients and families for care processes and outcomes, to peers for group practice advancement, and to the nurse manager for overall work performance.

Qualifications

• Competent evaluation with successful passing of probation; current on all mandatory classes/training.
• Licensure as a Registered Nurse in Maryland or eligible due to Compact agreements.
• Maintenance of 10 contact hours of education annually.
• Member of a professional organization.
• Recent clinical experience in a comparable setting.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Ability to lead others, such as charge nurse, preceptor, or clinical resource, and work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
• Proficiency in computer systems for managing patient information.
• Knowledge of growth and development principles across the lifespan and ability to assess data relevant to patient needs.
• Effective interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.

Patient Safety

• Ensures patient safety in job functions and participates in safety initiatives.
• Acts to correct observed risks, reports adverse events and near misses, and communicates risks to management.
