Position Summary
Under the direction of the Nurse Manager, Operating Room, and in accordance with established organizational and departmental policies, the Registered Nurse First Assistant (RNFA) plays an integral role in surgical procedures by supporting the lead surgeon throughout all phases of the operation.

The RNFA is responsible for providing advanced nursing care, including first assist functions such as tissue manipulation, hemostasis, suturing, and wound management, ensuring optimal patient outcomes and adherence to the highest standards of perioperative practice.

Key Responsibilities

  • Serve as the first assistant to the surgeon during operative procedures
  • Perform comprehensive preoperative assessments in collaboration with the surgical team
  • Ensure intraoperative continuity of care, including precise instrument handling and site exposure
  • Manage postoperative documentation and care coordination
  • Maintain compliance with surgical safety standards, infection control practices, and sterile field integrity
  • Actively participate in OR efficiency, quality improvement, and patient safety initiatives

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Education: Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing
  • Licensure: Current, unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state.

Certification

  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support) – required
  • BLS (Basic Life Support) – from AHA or American Red Cross – required
  • Completion of a formal RNFA program meeting AORN Core Curriculum standards – required
  • Experience: Minimum 5 years of perioperative nursing experience, with proficiency in both scrub and circulating roles

Certification: Basic Life Support, Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support
