POSITION OVERVIEW:This position requires the performance of a variety of duties to provide nursing care effectively and efficiently for individuals in various life stages. Comply with internal policies and procedures and applicable external regulatory requirements. Coordinate work within the department as well as with other departments.ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF JOB: (other duties may be assigned)Assess the patient’s needs during the visit.Assess the patient’s physical, spiritual, psychological and social needs throughout the visit.Complete the triage form with concise and complete information at time of triage or throughout the patient stay.Complete follow-up assessments during the patient’s stay following administration of medication, a procedure, or change in status according to Departmental policies and procedures.Perform invasive procedures.Coordinate IV therapy, phlebotomy and arterial blood gases.Follow policies and procedures for insertion of intravenous catheters, phlebotomy and ABG’s.Monitor site for infiltration or infection and properly document procedure on patient’s chart.Properly label laboratory tubes and enter into order entry with 95% accuracy.Provide direct, individualized nursing care.Deliver nursing care in accordance with hospital policies and procedures.Properly communicate pertinent information both orally and written to other staff members daily.Perform all unit specific duties in a timely and effective manner such as code attendance, etc.Administer medication accurately and in strict accordance with physician’s orders.Provide required education/information to the patient and/or his/her significant others.Provide the patient and significant others with proper use of equipment such as crutches, care of wound, administration of medication, etc.Document the type of education that is provided to the patient and/or significant others during patient stay and at time of discharge.Identify the depth of the patient/significant others’ needs.Review and complete discharge instructions with patient and/or significant others.Ensure proper communication with other staff members, patients, physicians and other hospital departments.Complete physician orders accurately and in a timely manner.Coordinate care with the x-ray department, laboratory and other nursing units.Provide concise report to others upon the patient’s admission to the Hospital.Answer the command phone with proper documentation of information.Perform proper phone etiquette when answering phone at all times.Demonstrate leadership and professionalism.Follow dress code at all times.Attend 75% of all required meetings on an annual basis.Participate in department Quality Initiative projects.Assist in the orientation of new employees during orientation period.Assume supervisor/charge nurse responsibilities when those individuals are not available.Maintain necessary certifications such as Basic Life Support, Advanced Life Support, Pediatric Advanced Life Support.Attend educational seminars and communicate information within thirty days of attendance at the seminar.Deal with conflict in a professional manner.Provide safe environment for patients.Follow policies and procedures for risk management.Perform ancillary patient care tasks.Perform EKG’s and enter pertinent information into order entry in a timely manner.Administer respiratory therapy and document the treatment when ordered.Transport patients throughout other areas of the Hospital setting.Provide clinical oversight of the nursing care process.Serve as a resource for staff including the licensed practical nurses, nurse aides, and other ancillary staff.Delegate nursing care duties as appropriate for the scope of practice of assignee.Periodically serve as the charge nurse responsible for the overall functioning of the nursing unit.Must remain up to date, knowledgeable and compliant on all CMS, DOH, and other applicable regulatory and compliance related issues in your department and area.Patient safety regulations and goals will be followed (i.e., using 2 patient identifiers, reporting critical values, medication reconciliation, etc)Perform appropriate documentation regarding narcotics administration (i.e. second signature for count and waste, etc.) Follow the regulations regarding restraint and seclusion, sentinel event notification, etc.Attend appropriate educational programs related to regulatory standards, updates and new initiatives.OTHER DUTIES OF JOB:Maintain competencies.Respond to codes outside of department.Maintain departmental inventories.Enter patient visit charges into order entry.Perform other related duties as assigned or required.Follow standard precaution guidelines.SUPERVISION RECEIVED:Supervision is received by the Clinical Coordinator/Emergency ServicesSUPERVISION ADMINISTERED:This position typically does not require the supervision of staff.MENTAL/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS OF JOB:This position typically requires:The ability to manage multiple projects/tasks, provide close attention to detail, adapt to a constantly changing work environment, withstand high pressure for results, meet frequent deadlines, establish own goals, work closely with others, maintain much record-keeping/routine paperwork, and utilize creativity. The ability to constantly stand, walk, communicate orally and hear conversation is also typically required. The ability to frequently lift between ten and 65 pounds, carry between 15 and 20 pounds, push over 200 pounds, pull over 200 pounds, repeatedly bend, use rapid mental/muscular coordination, use specific visual requirements, use depth perception and use color vision is also typically required. The ability to occasionally sit, climb stairs, balance, stoop, kneel, reach, use repetitive finger movements and withstand repetitive twisting or pressure involving wrists or hands is also typically required.WORK ENVIRONMENT:This position typically requires:Constant work outside and inside, contact with patients and exposure to blood and bodily fluids; and occasional exposure to fumes, irritants, toxins, working with machinery with moving parts, working alone and working more than 40 hours per week.PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT:This position typically requires:Respirator, eye protection, gloves, and body protection.QUALIFICATIONS:Education/Training/License/Certification:Minimum Diploma of Nursing required. Current Pennsylvania Registered Nurse License required.Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation, Advanced Cardiac Life Support, Pediatric Advanced Life Support Certifications and IV Therapy and Dysrhythmia Course preferred at time of hire, required within 6 months of hire date or enrolled in next available course.Work Experience:Six months to one year related experience and/or training preferred.KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals.Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.Ability to apply such concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.Knowledge of state nursing guidelines and health standards.Effective oral and written communication skills and interpersonal skills.
