Job summary

A community healthcare provider in Hot Springs, Virginia is seeking a Registered Nurse for the Emergency Department. Registered Nurse - Emergency Department

Reports To

Chief Nursing Officer

Job Summary

Provides direct and indirect patient care in the emergency care setting. Provides care that reflects initiative, flexibility and responsibility indicative of professional expectation with a minimum of supervision. Is able to triage safely, rapidly and accurately, every patient that enters the emergency care system. Determines priorities of care based on physical and psychosocial needs, as well as factors influencing patient flow through the system. Communicates with Emergency Department physicians about changes in patient’s status, symptomatology and results of diagnostic studies. Is able to respond quickly and accurately to changes in condition or response to treatment.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Administer medications correctly based on the age and clinical condition of the patient.
  • Perform patient care responsibilities, considering the standard of care specific to the patient’s age.
  • Conduct head-to-toe assessments on all patients and reassessments as required by policy.
  • Rapidly and accurately assigns triage categories: Emergent, Urgent and Non-Urgent.
  • Revises standardized Aftercare Instructions based upon identified learning needs and evaluates effectiveness of learning. Family is included in teaching as appropriate.
  • Perform treatments and provide services within the scope of licensure.
  • Communicate appropriately and clearly with the Nurse Manager, co-workers, and physicians.
  • Consult with other departments as necessary to provide an interdisciplinary approach to patient care.
  • Provide care appropriate to the condition and age of the patient, including pediatric, geriatric, and general populations.
  • Coordinates and supervises patient care as necessary.
  • Assist physicians with procedures and perform services requiring technical and manual skills.
  • Maintain flexibility, organization, and the ability to function under stressful situations.
  • Treat patients and their families with respect and dignity, ensuring patient confidentiality.
  • Interact professionally with patients and their families, involving them in the formation of the plan of care.
  • Maintain proper inventory of supplies, linen, and medications.
  • Maintain orderliness in patient rooms and the nursing unit.
  • Ensure proper billing charges are documented.
  • Participate in Performance Improvement initiatives and identify processes for improvement.
  • Maintain good working relationships within the department and with other departments.
  • Ensure that documentation meets current standards and policies.
  • Address the psychosocial needs of patients and their families.
  • Operate equipment safely and correctly.
  • Coordinate and supervise patient care as necessary.
  • Manage high-risk procedures, including restraints and transfusions.
  • Be knowledgeable about patient rights and complaint procedures.
  • Follow infection control guidelines and use appropriate personal protective equipment.
  • Because of the fluctuating demands of the hospital operation, it may be necessary that each employee perform a multitude of different functions; therefore, as an essential part of your position, you will be expected to help others when the occasion arises. Accordingly, you may be expected to perform other tasks as needed or work hours outside of scheduled shift as needed.
Professional Requirements
  • Adhere to the dress code; maintain a neat and clean appearance.
  • Complete annual educational requirements and comply with regulatory requirements.
  • Wear identification while on duty and use the computerized punch time system correctly.
  • Reports to work on time and as scheduled, completes work within designated time.
  • Attend staff meetings.
  • Participate in orientation of other staff members.
Regulatory Requirements
  • Current state Registered Nurse Licensure.
  • Current BLS, with ACLS and PALS required within 6 months of hire.
  • Two or more years of recent critical care or ED experience preferred.
Work Environment
  • Exposure to various environmental conditions, including indoor and outdoor settings, temperature fluctuations, and biological, mechanical, electrical, or chemical hazards.
  • Risk of electrical shock, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, and the requirement for personal protective equipment.
Physical Demands
  • Perform various physical activities, including standing, walking, sitting, pushing/pulling, and lifting weights up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to operate in an environment that requires manual dexterity, coordination, and a range of motion.
