Job summary

The Medical University of South Carolina's Brain Stimulation Services seeks an ECT Nurse to coordinate and provide comprehensive nursing care for patients undergoing ECT, from pre-procedure assessment through post-anesthesia recovery.

Job description

Job Description Summary

Brain Stimulation Services is a clinic focused on delivering cutting edge, evidence-based therapy to target treatment-resistant depression and other mood disorders using stimulation techniques including electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) and transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). Located at MUSC’s Institute of Psychiatry, this clinic treats both inpatients and outpatients.

Responsibilities

The Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) Nurse is responsible for coordinating and providing comprehensive nursing care to patients undergoing ECT treatment across the continuum of care, including pre-procedure assessment, intra-procedural support, and post-anesthesia recovery monitoring. This role collaborates closely with psychiatrists, anesthesia providers, and interdisciplinary teams to ensure safe, efficient, and patient-centered treatment delivery while maintaining compliance with regulatory, accreditation, and organizational standards. The ECT Nurse provides patient and family education, monitors treatment response and side effects, supports quality and safety initiatives, assists with scheduling and care coordination, and contributes to the ongoing development and optimization of neuromodulation services.

Minimum Training and Education

Bachelor of Nursing degree preferred. RN staff hired on or after July 1, 2013 with an Associate or Diploma degree in nursing are required to be enrolled in an accredited BSN program within two years and successfully obtain a BSN degree within four years of the RN hire or reclassification date. A minimum of one year of work experience as a registered nurse required.

Licensure, Certifications, Registrations

Licensure as a registered nurse by the South Carolina Board of Nursing or a compact state. Current Basic Life Support (BLS) required, either a certification from an American Heart Association (AHA) BLS for Healthcare Providers (or AHA recognized equivalent) or an American Red Cross CPR/AED for Professional Rescuer and Healthcare Provider.

Physical Requirements
  • Ability to stand or sit for extended periods of time.
  • Proficiency in manual dexterity and fine motor skills for tasks such as taking patient vitals, administering injections, or conducting physical exams.
  • Capacity to lift and move patients or medical equipment as needed.
  • Visual acuity and color perception to accurately read medical charts, documents, and monitors.
  • Auditory ability to effectively communicate with patients and colleagues, as well as to perceive important sounds such as alarms or patient instructions.
  • Stamina and resilience to handle the physical and emotional demands of providing patient care, including long shifts and potentially stressful situations.
  • Mobility to navigate clinical environments, including moving between patient rooms, offices, and other areas of the facility.
  • Compliance with infection control protocols and proper use of personal protective equipment to maintain a safe and healthy work environment.
