Job summary

Beaufort Memorial Hospital seeks a Registered Nurse for the Acute Care Float Pool to provide flexible, skilled nursing coverage across hospital units. The float pool supports staffing stability, improves throughput, and promotes high-quality patient outcomes.

Assignments run in six-week blocks with potential reassignment based on census and acuity. Applicants must hold an active South Carolina RN license with at least 1 year of acute care experience and maintain BLS/ACLS/NIHSS certifications.

Qualifications

• Maintain an active South Carolina RN license.
• Minimum of 1 year of recent acute care experience.
• Complete competency validation for assigned clinical areas.
• Maintain required certifications: BLS, ACLS, NIHSS, and others as required by assigned areas.

Responsibilities

• Support patient care needs across multiple clinical areas as a float pool RN.
• Be assigned to primary units for six-week periods with potential reassignment based on needs.
• Float to any competency-validated area within your track to meet census and staffing needs.
• Participate in organizational staffing and throughput initiatives and uphold high-quality patient outcomes.

Description

The Nursing Float Pool Program is designed to provide a flexible, highly skilled workforce to support patient care needs across the hospital, help to improve staffing stability, enhance patient throughput, and promoting high-quality patient outcomes. Float Pool Registered Nurses are organizational resources who support staffing needs across multiple clinical areas based on competency, patient acuity, and operational requirements.

Six-Week Assignment Structure:

• Float pool nurses may be assigned to a primary unit or service area for six-week assignment periods. These assignments provide continuity and staffing stability but do not establish a permanent home unit. Nurses may still be reassigned during any shift based on operational needs.

Float Pool Expectations:

• Float pool nurses are hospital-wide resources and may float to any competency-validated area within their designed track based on patient census, staffing shortages, acuity, patient throughput needs, organizational priorities, or emergency situations.

Scheduling:

• Full-time scheduling commitments will be established by organizational policy. Schedules will generally be posted two weeks in advance when operationally feasible. Every other weekend is a required and consistent component of the schedule. Scheduling of weekday shifts will be determined according to the staffing and operational needs of the unit.

Hurricane Team and Holiday Scheduling:

• Staff will be assigned to a designated hurricane team upon hire. Hurricane team assignments will alternate every other year to ensure equitable distribution of responsibilities during emergency operations.
• Staff will be assigned to work either Thanksgiving or Christmas, in addition to the New Year holiday. The Thanksgiving/Christmas assignment will alternate annually to ensure holiday coverage. Staff who voluntarily elect to work on both Thanksgiving and Christmas may be excused from the New Year's holiday requirement for that year, subject to scheduling needs and leadership approval.

Compensation:

• Float pool nurses may receive a Float Pool differential in addition to applicable shifts, weekends, and premium pay differentials.

Position Requirements

• Maintain an active South Carolina Registered Nurse license.
• Possess a minimum of one (1) year of recent acute care experience.
• Successfully complete competency validation for assigned clinical areas.
• Maintain certifications, including:
  • Basic Life Support (BLS)
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
  • National Institute of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS)
  • Additional certifications as required by assigned clinical areas.

Eligible clinical areas may include:

• Medical-Surgical Units
• Observation Units
• Inpatient Rehabilitation Units
• Progressive Care Units
• Emergency Department Acute Care Hold Patients
• Stroke Education/Care
• Joint Replacement requirements
• Other competency-validated acute care settings

Float Pool nurses will maintain required licensure, certifications, competencies, professionalism, flexibility, and participation in organizational staffing and throughput initiatives.
