Job summary

Newport Mental Health in Rhode Island is seeking an experienced Registered Nurse to provide integrated, patient-centered psychiatric care for adults 18+ between 8:00 AM and 4:30 PM. This full-time role offers a multidisciplinary team environment with no weekends, holidays, or evenings.

The nurse will administer medications, perform assessments, educate patients, and coordinate care across facilities. A RI nursing license is required; BSN preferred, with 1–2 years in psychiatric settings

Qualifications

• Current licensure to practice professional nursing in Rhode Island.
• Psychiatric nursing experience preferred (inpatient/outpatient/community/ Emergency services).
• BSN preferred but not required.
• 1–2 years of nursing experience preferred.
• Excellent communication and team-based care abilities.

Responsibilities

• Provide integrated, patient-centered psychiatric nursing to adults 18+ with serious mental illness.
• Perform nursing assessments including MSE and risk assessments.
• Administer medications per orders, including injections.
• Educate patients about medications and readiness.
• Coordinate care with other healthcare professionals and facilities.
• Participate in interdisciplinary meetings and maintain accurate records.
• Support patients and families with guidance and emotional support.
• Supervise and contribute to competency development of new staff in supervised programs.

What you will be doing (essential duties) …

We are seeking an experienced Registered Nurse to provide integrated, patient-centered care between the hours of 8:00 AM and 4:30 PM, with no weekends, holidays, or evenings. Nursing at NMH is team-based, offering an excellent opportunity to learn and strengthen therapeutic skills in a multidisciplinary setting. The Registered Nurse will work with an adult (18+) population with severe and persistent mental illness.

Main duties and responsibilities:

• Provide professional, patient-centered, psychiatric/mental health nursing to clients with severe and persistent mental illness.
• Complete nursing assessments of client’s bio=social needs including MSE and assessment of risk profiles.
• Provide medication per MD/NP orders, including injections.
• Provide medication education based on client’s need and assessed level of readiness and level of understanding.
• Practice integrated health by coordinating with other healthcare professionals and medical facilities.
• Participate in professional interdisciplinary meetings.
• Maintain accurate patient medical records.
• Provide guidance and emotional support to patients and their family members.
• Actively engage in supervision of at least one-hour individual supervision per month and three hours of group supervision.
• The Team R.N. is responsible for reviewing and approving competencies of new staff for the supervised medication program.

Requirements

What we expect of you…

• Current licensure to practice professional nursing in the State of Rhode Island.
• Previous psychiatric nursing experience preferred, which may include inpatient, outpatient, community support, emergency services.
• Bachelors of Science Nursing (BSN) preferred.
• 1-2 years of nursing experience preferred.
• Excellent communication skills with the ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment.
• Positive attitude, detail orientated a must.
• Willingness to take an active role in professional growth and the supervision process.
• Valid Driver’s License with reliable transportation to travel to our facilities throughout the area.
