This Registered Nurse position is located in Nursing Service at the Jamaica Plain location. This position is full-time at 40 hours per week.

Major Duties:
- The registered nurse is responsible for managing complex patient situations, acts as a patient advocate, and provides supportive assistance to all members of the healthcare team.
- The incumbent is a Registered Nurse who is responsible for the clinical, administrative, research, and educational aspects of the assignment.
- The following functions are unique to the Urology Procedure Clinic RN: The nurse will be cross-trained to float between urology, pain, and Ambulatory Surgery.
- Ability to function independently with good clinical judgment.
- Strong interpersonal communication skills, both orally and written.
- Obtains an assessment on patients with complaints on their urinary system.
- Assists in performing diagnostic procedures such as cystoscopy, prostate biopsy, stent exchange, Void Trials, SPt change, Urodynamic, etc.
- Minor surgical procedures, vasectomy, circumcision.
- Provides care and teaching on the integrity of urinary catheter.
- Performs urinary catheterizations using sterile technique, gives catheter care, and bladder irrigation, and trial of voids.
- Assist the Physician with formulating a teaching plan to address genitourinary problems and long-term catheter use for patients/their families.
- Maintains knowledge on the use of various urologic instruments and supplies.
- Applies principles of asepsis to care of urologic patients.
- Collaborates closely with physicians, family members, and patients to ensure appointments, and services are available for patients.
- Reports any complications or issues to the physician.
- Verifies allergies and administers antibiotics pertinent to procedures such as cystoscopy, bander stent exchange or removal, vasectomy, prostate biopsies, TRUS, etc.
- Demonstrates effective communication and interpersonal skills that enhance professional nursing practice.
- Demonstrates professional behaviors that promote cooperation and teamwork with internal and external patients, team members, and all other personnel/hospital departments that are involved in the care of the patient.
- Maintains physical and emotional comfort and support during urologic procedures.
- Prepares patients and sets-up urodynamic test study as well as knowledgeable of the relevant local protocols.
Work Schedule: Full-time, Days, 6:30 am - 3:00 pm; 7:00 am - 3:30 pm or 7:30 am - 4:00 pm
Education:
Note: Only education or degrees recognized by the U.S. Department of Education from accredited colleges, universities, schools, or institutions may be used to qualify for Federal employment. The Associate Degree Nursing (ADN), Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing (BSN), or Master of Science degree in Nursing (MSN) must be fully accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or the Commission On Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).
Requirements:
- U.S. Citizenship; non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
- All applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment.
- Participation in the seasonal influenza vaccination program is a requirement for all Department of Veterans Affairs Health Care Personnel (HCP).
