Job summary

Hospital for Special Care in New Britain, CT, seeks a Registered Dietitian to join the Medical Nutrition team on a 20-hour-per-week schedule (First Shift). The RD provides medical nutrition therapy and collaborates with food services and medical staff to support patient care.

Qualifications

• RD licensure or RD eligible with credentialing obtained within 90 days of hire.

• One year clinical experience in the patient population area to be served (preferred).
• Proficient in nutrition support calculations for Enteral and Parenteral nutrition (preferred).
• Familiar with Nutrition Focused Physical Examinations (preferred).
• Familiar with navigating an electronic medical record (preferred).

Responsibilities

• Assess nutritional status of patients and develop individualized nutrition care plans.
• Complete documentation of patient assessments, interventions and outcomes.
• Consider medical, physical, psychological and cultural needs in planning nutrition interventions.
• Monitor effectiveness of nutrition care and adjust as needed.
• Coordinate nutrition care with food services and provide guidance to staff.
• Provide education and supervision to staff and volunteers as appropriate.
• Plan for discharge education and provide necessary materials and referrals.
• Attend team meetings and communicate to develop interdisciplinary plan of care.
• Support continuous quality improvement and collect QA data.

Job Summary

The registered dietitian is a member of an interdisciplinary team who is responsible for providing quality medical nutritional therapy to patients. Responsibilities will include communicating relevant information to other team members, food services, and medical staff and providing education to staff, patients/families and others as needed.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Ability to tolerate up to four hours of consecutive work. Position requires occasional periods of walking, standing and prolonged sitting. Occasional need to initiate body positional changes to access equipment, materials and files from high and low areas. Ability to lift or carry objects up to ten pounds continuously, twenty pounds frequently, fifty pounds occasionally. Ability to push/pull greater than sixty pounds is required occasionally. Fine manipulation is required for writing and computer usage, as well as for some types of patient care techniques. Intact vision needed for observation of patient's non-verbal responses and skin assessment. Must be able to initiate and interpret communication with patient and others.

COGNITIVE DEMANDS

Job requires independent problem identification. Abstract reasoning and adaptability to new situations, changing environments and information and quick decision-making are required. A high degree of selective attention, and/or concentration in the presence of noise/distraction is necessary. Job requires legibility, spelling and abbreviation accuracy, and logical sentence/paragraph organization. A working knowledge and familiarity with professional/medical terms and definitions is required. Job requires a high level of communication skill including expression of abstract/complex ideas, use of negotiation and active listening and an ability to dialogue with multiple parties. Job requires the ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide with all units of measure, and the ability to perform these operations with common and decimal fractions. To compute ratio, rate, percent and accurately use equations. Job requires an ability to comprehend abstractions and to make inferences. A working knowledge and familiarity with professional (e.g., medical) terms and definitions and ability to interpret lab values is required.

WORK DEMANDS

Job requires primarily working indoors with an occasional need to be outdoors. Job requires working regularly around many others, continuously with others and occasionally in a crowded space. Schedule fluctuation is occasionally unpredictable due to census, documentation requirements or program development. There may be occasional exposure to odors, fluctuation in temperature and hazards associated with food preparation, storage and delivery.

Essential Functions

• Assesses the nutritional status of patients and develops appropriate individualized nutrition care plan.
• Completes documentation of all patient assessments, interventions, education, interdisciplinary communication and patient outcome accurately and on time.
• Considers medical, physical, psychological, environmental, age level, and developmental, cultural, ethnic, religious, and language needs in planning and carrying out nutritional interventions.
• Monitors effectiveness of nutrition care plan and makes appropriate recommendations and changes as needed.
• Coordinates nutrition care with food services and provides guidance, education, and direction to dietetic technician(s) and food and nutrition employees when appropriate.
• Provides education, training and supervision of support staff, volunteers, paraprofessional or other disciplines as appropriate.
• Plans for discharge/education needs and provides necessary materials, referrals and resources.
• Attends team meetings to share patient data and goals and communicates with team members to develop and implement an interdisciplinary plan of care.
• Promotes continuous quality improvement and collects Quality Assurance/Compliance data.
