Job summary

Job Summary

The registered dietitian is a member of an interdisciplinary team who is responsible for providing quality medical nutritional therapy to patients. Responsibilities include communicating relevant information to other team members, food services, and medical staff, and providing education to staff, patients/families and others as needed.

Qualifications
  • Certification Required: RD Licensure or RD eligible with credentialing obtained within 90 days of hire
  • Required: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree and dietetic internship
  • Preferred: Proficient in Nutrition Care Process
  • Preferred: One year clinical experience in the patient population area to be served
  • Preferred: Proficient in nutrition support calculations for both enteral and parenteral nutrition
  • Preferred: Knowledge in or ability to learn/perform Nutrition Focused Physical Examinations
  • Preferred: Familiar with and able to navigate an electronic medical record
Responsibilities
  • Assess the nutritional status of patients and develop individualized nutrition care plans.
  • Complete documentation of all patient assessments, interventions, education, interdisciplinary communication, and patient outcomes accurately and on time.
  • Consider medical, physical, psychological, environmental, age, developmental, cultural, ethnic, religious, and language needs in planning and carrying out nutritional interventions.
  • Monitor effectiveness of nutrition care plan and make appropriate recommendations and changes as needed.
  • Coordinate nutrition care with food services and provide guidance, education, and direction to dietetic technician(s) and food and nutrition employees when appropriate.
  • Provide education, training, and supervision of support staff, volunteers, paraprofessional, or other disciplines as appropriate.
  • Plan for discharge/education needs and provide necessary materials, referrals, and resources.
  • Attend team meetings to share patient data and goals and communicate with team members to develop and implement an interdisciplinary plan of care.
  • Promote continuous quality improvement and collect Quality Assurance/Compliance data.
Physical Demands
  • Ability to tolerate up to four hours of consecutive work.
  • Occasional periods of walking, standing, and prolonged sitting.
  • Occasional need to initiate body positional changes to access equipment, materials, and files from high and low areas.
  • Ability to lift or carry objects up to ten pounds continuously, twenty pounds frequently, fifty pounds occasionally.
  • Ability to push/pull greater than sixty pounds is required occasionally.
  • Fine manipulation required for writing and computer usage, as well as for some types of patient care techniques.
  • Intact vision needed for observation of patient’s non-verbal responses and skin assessment.
  • Must be able to initiate and interpret communication with patient and others.
Cognitive Demands
  • Independent problem identification.
  • Abstract reasoning and adaptability to new situations, changing environments and information and quick decision-making.
  • High degree of selective attention, and/or concentration in the presence of noise/distraction.
  • Legibility, spelling and abbreviation accuracy, and logical sentence/paragraph organization.
  • Knowledge and familiarity with professional/medical terms and definitions.
  • High level of communication skill including expression of abstract/complex ideas, negotiation, and active listening, and ability to dialogue with multiple parties.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, divide with all units of measure and common/decimal fractions; compute ratio, rate, percent, and accurately use equations.
  • Comprehend abstractions and make inferences; interpret lab values.
Work Demands
  • Work indoors with occasional need to be outdoors.
  • Work regularly around many others, continuously with others, occasionally in crowded space.
  • Schedule fluctuation occasionally unpredictable due to census, documentation requirements, or program development.
  • Occasional exposure to odors, temperature fluctuation, and hazards associated with food preparation, storage and delivery.
