Position Overview

The Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU is hiring a dietitian with experience in initiating and managing the nutrition care of children needing the ketogenic diet. This role involves establishing a new service as part of our nationally accredited Level 4 Epilepsy center, supporting outpatient and inpatient management. The ideal candidate will have comprehensive experience in nutrition care for children with developmental disabilities, including nutrition support, and possess strong communication skills.

Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements
  • Registered Dietitian (RD) by the Commission on Dietetic Registration of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics
  • For Clinical Nutrition I: May be registry eligible, but must pass the RD exam within 6 months of employment.
  • Advancement from Clinical Nutrition I to II required after one year of passing the RD exam.
Employment Requirements
  • Maintain RD status with the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics
  • CPR training for outpatient nutrition clinic staff
Experience
  • Clinical Nutrition I: Less than 1 year in an acute care setting
  • Clinical Nutrition II: 1+ years in an acute care setting as a Registered Dietitian
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in counseling in outpatient or acute care settings for Clinical Nutrition II
  • Specialty certifications, training in weight management, motivational interviewing, and clinical research protocols are preferred.
Responsibilities
  • Perform nutrition care activities per departmental policies
  • Order and modify diets, manage enteral feedings, and order patient measurements after competency is confirmed
  • Communicate with healthcare teams and provide staff in-services
Additional Requirements
  • Work weekends as assigned
  • Travel to satellite clinics as needed
  • Flexibility for evening hours in outpatient positions
Physical and Mental Demands

Prolonged standing and sitting, lifting <20 lbs, and activities requiring strong recall, reasoning, and communication skills in a fast-paced environment.
