SUMMARY OF POSITION:
The Dental Assistant will provide chair side assistance to the dentist; perform related duties, and assist with clerical work as needed.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Prepare operatories and equipment for patient treatment.
- Refer clients to supervisor in situations that cannot be handled.
- Assist with front duties including appointment scheduling, chart filing, Superbill entry, typing, etc.
- Provide chair side assistance to the dentist using four-handed dentistry techniques.
- Take, process, and mount dental radiographs.
- Maintain dental operatories, dental laboratory, dental equipment, and sterilization area in proper working order.
- Carry out limited dental laboratory procedures such as pouring models of impressions.
- Assist in topical fluoride administration.
- Ensure that the patient’s record, Superbills, and all relevant paperwork are completed and routed to the front desk.
- Ensure that proper arrangements are made for the patient’s follow-up care.
- Clean and sterilize dental instruments using the ultrasonic machine and steam sterilizer.
- Disinfect operatories and treatment area according to NEMS infection control protocol.
- Provide dental health education, including oral hygiene instruction and dietary advice, to patients and to target groups of outreach programs.
- Keep track of DentiCal or insurance authorization and schedule appointments accordingly.
- Handle dental records, filing appropriate information in dental charts, file X-rays.
- Handle medical records, requesting charts from the Medical Department as needed.
- Obtain and update necessary information from clients and enter it in dental charts, including DentiCal, MediCal, Medicare, and private insurance coverage, current address, and telephone number.
- Perform other job duties as required by manager/supervisor.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- At least 2 years of dental assistant experience preferred.
- Certificate to take dental radiographs.
- Familiarity with infection control policies and procedures.
- Current documentation of Basic Life Support required.
LANGUAGE:
- Must be able to fluently speak, read, and write English.
- Fluent in Chinese (Cantonese and/or Mandarin), Vietnamese, Spanish, and other languages may be required depending on location.
- Fluency in other languages is an asset.
STATUS:
- This is an FLSA Non-exempt position.
- This is not an OSHA high-risk position.
- This is a full-time position.
