TITLE: REGISTERED DENTAL ASSISTANT

REPORTS TO: DENTIST/DENTAL HYGIENIST/RDHAP (CLINICAL SUPERVISOR)

LOCATION:RICHMOND, CA AND ANTIOCH, CA

STATUS: NON- EXEMPT/HOURLY

Brighter Beginnings is a 501c3 nonprofit organization and has been responding to the needs of families in resource-poor neighborhoods since 1984 when our work began in response to the alarming differences in mortality and illness rates among African American babies compared to other children.

Brighter Beginnings has grown into a respected and well-connected organization with locations in Oakland, Richmond, Bay Point, and Antioch. We have a multi-cultural, bi-lingual staff of passionate and committed family service professionals; in fact, many of our staff came to this work because of the challenges they faced in their own families.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Registered Dental Assistant is responsible for assisting the Dentist, Dental Hygienist, or Registered Dental Hygienist in Alternative Practice (RDHAP) in the clinical treatment of patients.

QUALIFICATIONS:

JOB QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

  1. Minimum of High School Diploma or Equivalent.
  2. Graduate of an accredited dental assisting program or dental assisting experience preferred.
  3. Current and valid California Registered Dental Assistant License.
  4. Valid BLS and CPR certification.
  5. Coursework in dental instruments and procedures for all ages.
  6. Compliance with California dental practice requirements (e.g., x-ray requirements, OSHA training)
  7. Commitment to CE for career development
  8. Bilingual (English - Spanish) is highly preferred.
  9. Minimum of 1 to 3 years in a dental office setting for all ages.
  10. Proficient in taking digital X-rays.
  11. Skilled in Electronic Health Records patient filing records used for billing, visit scheduling, and data entry, and in Microsoft Office, data entry and use of business email.
  12. Experience and understanding of billing processes and guidelines for private and public health insurance programs, especially CCHP, Medicare, and Medi-Cal.
  13. Ability to gain proficiency in additional computer programs required to perform the job.
  14. Good verbal and written communication skills, including spelling and English grammar with the ability to understand and complete oral and written instruction.
  15. Good interpersonal skills to maintain effective rapport with patients, dentists, other staff members, and community
  16. Effective verbal skills to communicate with patients and staff
  17. Ability to work as a team by communicating, collaborating, and cooperating with team members.
  18. Occasional evenings and weekends may be required.
  19. May be required to work at an alternative site.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Patient Management

  1. Greet patients when they sign in and monitor arrival time.
  2. Set up treatment rooms for procedures.
  3. Escort patients to the treatment room.
  4. Seat patients in treatment rooms.
  5. Show care and concern, and help patients feel comfortable.
  6. Obtain and review health histories according to office protocol.
  7. Ensure patients are always attended to.
  8. Anticipate and assist with the needs of the dental team.
  9. Perform expanded functions and other tasks as assigned by the dental team.
  10. Mix dental materials.
  11. Ensure patients’ questions are answered thoroughly before they leave.
  12. Chart patients and record date, service rendered, and any charges.
  13. Escort patients from the treatment room.
  14. Ensure proper treatment notes are recorded in the patient’s chart.
  15. Educates patients on appropriate oral hygiene strategies to maintain oral health; (e.g., tooth brushing, flossing and nutritional counseling).
  16. Apply fluoride treatments.
  17. Perform clinical procedures as the practice act allows and as directed by a dentist or RDHAP.
  18. Give patient instructions and demonstrate when necessary.
  19. Monitor patient flow.

Treatment Room Management and Sterilization

  1. Keep dental units ready, stocked, and clean.
  2. Oversee cleanliness of the treatment room according to sterilization procedures.
  3. Disinfect treatment rooms according to OSHA regulations.
  4. Sterilize all instruments and handpieces according to OSHA regulations.
  5. Keep trays, instruments, and treatment room drawers organized.
  6. Ensure that the office sterilization procedures document is on display.
  7. Promptly send out and monitor all dental laboratory cases.
  8. Implement the preventative maintenance/cleaning schedule for dental equipment.
  9. Follow laboratory procedures according to office protocol.

Records Management

  1. Securely store and handle patient records in compliance with state and federal requirements, including HIPAA privacy and security regulations.
  2. Accurately file patient information.
  3. Arrange patient charts and radiographs for the next day’s appointments.
  4. Track cases and referrals to and from other doctors.
  5. Assist in the administration of the recall system

Inventory Management

  1. Monitor inventory and order dental office supplies as needed.
  2. Ensure that treatment rooms are stocked at all times

Office Participation

  1. Help in other areas of the office when necessary (i.e., answering phones, unpacking supplies, completing insurance forms, generating reports, documenting, filing, moving former patient records, etc.).
  2. Be an active participant in team meetings.
  3. Promote team concept by interacting with others in the office.

Completes other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

OTHER JOB REQUIREMENTS

This job requires the passing of a background check, a negative TB test or clear chest x-ray (less than 1 year old), Physical Exam (less than 6 months old), provide updated vaccination records, Hepatitis B vaccination, annual flu vaccination, Covid Vaccine and boosters, and maintain a current BLS card. Physical examination must indicate that the employee is able to meet the physical requirements of the job including: Lifting, Walking, Stooping, Bending, and Twisting.
