This is a Promotional and Open recruitment to establish an eligibility list, fill vacancies, and hire substitutes. Substitutes work on an as-needed basis to fill in for absent employees. The eligibility list will be used to fill permanent vacancies which may occur during the life of the eligibility list. In a promotional and open recruitment, the promotional list shall take precedence. When the promotional list contains fewer than three eligible and willing employees, certification of additional ranks shall then be made from the open list.

Positions in this classification are full-time 32.5 hours per week, 11 months/184 workdays per year.

Basic Function

Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, assist in the implementation and training of individualized intervention plans; utilize the principles of Applied Behavior Analysis to monitor behavior reduction strategies and student progress on behaviors goals outlined in student Individualized Education Plans (IEP), Behavior Intervention Plans (BIP), and Functional Behavior Assessments (FBA).

Distinguishing Characteristics

Registered Behavior Technician incumbents work with children with Autism Spectrum Disorders and/or severe behavioral challenges. Registered Behavior Technician incumbents implement behavioral intervention strategies to monitor, redirect, and modify inappropriate behaviors. Registered Behavior Technician incumbents work within a special education, specially-funded, pull-out program, or other setting characterized by increased independence of action and increased complexity of work based on unique needs of the students served or equipment operated. By contrast, Senior Instructional Assistant-Behaviorally Challenged incumbents assist a certificated teacher or specialist in providing instruction to individuals with behavioral challengesor small groups of students in a special education program.

FUNCTION & DUTIES
  • Perform as a collaborative member of an intensive behavioral team to ensure delivery of a high quality interventions across environments. E
  • Implement and assist in the training and ongoing oversight of individualized intervention in the reduction of behavioral challenges and promotion of skill acquisition using the principles of Applied Behavior Analysis. E
  • Observe, monitor,and record behavior of students according to approved procedures; collectand maintain data on individual behavior plans; report progress regarding student academic performance and behavior reduction and skill acquisition with a high level of accuracy, consistency, and organization. E
  • Assist and follow up with consultation provided to classroom teachers and school personnel for specific function-based behavior strategies and student specific Behavior Intervention Plans. E
  • Assist in the training of classroom staff on data collection systems. E
  • Assist in the creation and production of behavioral and educational materials. E
  • Generate weekly data summaries and submit data reports within scheduled timeline; provide assistance in the preparation of student data sheets, charts, records, graphs, or other displays of student performance data. E
  • Utilize and operate computerized instructional and audio visual equipment as assigned. E
  • Attend regularly scheduled meetings to review student progress and concerns as well as review data. E
  • When necessary, and with the support of the classroom team, use Nonviolent Crisis Prevention and Intervention strategies to prevent and/or de-escalate challenging behavior; reducing risk of injury and enhancing the safety of the students and staff. E
  • Assure the health and safety of students by following health and safety practices and regulations. E
  • Assist students receiving special education servicesin learning proper personal hygiene and in developing self-help skills as assigned. E
  • Assist students with personal hygiene; wash hands and faces; monitor individual toilet training schedules; toilet students and change diapers; change clothing as needed. E
  • Administer first aid and CPR as needed to students with chronic and acute medical problems. E
  • Perform a variety of clerical duties according to established guidelines. E
  • Perform routine custodial duties to maintain assigned facility in a clean and sanitary condition. E
  • Supervise students during lunch time, on the playground or when mainstreamed into another class; supervise the loading and unloading of students on school buses as assigned. E
  • Facilitate structured peer group activities, as appropriate. E
  • Participate in meetings and in-service training programs as assigned. E

Knowledge Of

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

Behavior intervention strategies including, but not limited to, NonviolentCrisis Prevention Intervention approaches, applied behavior analytic methods prompting strategies reinforcement systems), Behavior Intervention and functional communication-based strategies. Child guidance principles and practices, especially as they relate to students with learning disabilities, developmental delays and behaviors demonstrated by individuals with autism. Demonstrate fluent behavioral data collection skills, with a high level of accuracy, consistency, and organization.

Education And Experience, Licenses And Other Requirements

Any combination equivalent to: graduation from high school and one year of experience in working with learners with disabilities in an organized setting. Completion of Registered Behavior Technician training program, as outlined by the Behavior Analyst Certification Board.

Licenses And Other Requirements

Annually pass the Registered Behavior Technician Competency Assessment, as outlined by the Behavior Analyst Certification Board and supervised by Autism and Behavior Program Specialists. Valid First Aid and CPR Certificates issued by an authorized agency, as well as meeting requirements to keep certificates current. Some positions in this class may be required to speak, read, and write in a second designated language.

Physical Abilities

Seeing to monitor student behavior during classroom activities, hearing and speaking to provide assistance and information related to classroom assignments, dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer, audio-visual and other educational training equipment, bending at the waist, kneeling, and standing and walking for extended periods of time; lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling students weighing up to 50 lbs. unassisted, and over 50 lbs. with assistance.

Hazards: Aggressive behavior of students and emergency situations. May be subject to physical and emotional outbursts by students, including such behaviors as kicking, spitting, scratching and biting.

The District offers two excellent medical plans, Blue Shield and Kaiser Permanente; two dental plans, Delta Dental and MetLife SafeGuard; and vision care through Vision Service Plan (VSP). Currently full-time employees (employees working 6 hours or more per day) pay 20% of the premium cost for these plans. All plans are available to the employee and their dependents. This coverage is available to employees working a minimum of 20 hours per week. Retirement benefits include membership in CalPERS (California Public Employee's Retirement System) and Social Security (OASDI). This is a joint contribution plan. To qualify for CalPERS an employee must work a minimum of 20 hours per week or already be a member, if not the employee is eligible for an alternative retirement plan.

Additionally, the District encourages employees to pursue professional growth, and provides financial incentive for classified employees completing professional growth programs. Additional benefits available to employees to which the District does not contribute include life insurance, a Section 125 Flexible Benefit Plan, an income protection plan, and a credit union.

Substitute employees are not eligible for vacation or holiday pay but are eligible to earn sick leave at the rate of one hour per 30 hours worked, not to exceed 48 hours. Further, substitute employees are not automatically eligible for CalPERS or District health benefits.
