Job summary

Behavioral Emotional and Academic Mentoring LLC in Downey, CA seeks a part-time after-school assistant to support students with special needs. Hours are 1:30 pm to 6:15 pm, Monday through Friday, at various Downey Unified School District locations.

You will assist staff with instructional activities, materials, classroom management, social skills, and basic hygiene, under supervision. A high school diploma or equivalent is required; RBT training and ASL knowledge are required by BEAM.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Direct support to students with special needs.
  • Participate in activities planned by the after-school program staff.
  • Assist in the preparation and development of instructional training activities and materials.
  • Assist the after-school program staff with in-class activities based on specific instructions.
  • Maintain a neat and orderly classroom environment by keeping materials and equipment organized.
  • Use effective teaching and behavior management techniques to maintain a positive learning atmosphere.
  • Provide general impressions and observations of students to staff.
  • Work with students individually, in small groups, or in centers planned by staff.
  • Assist with classroom technology, adaptive devices, and equipment.
  • Assist with social skills.
  • Assist with toileting, diapering, dressing, and hygiene.
  • Keep restrooms clean and orderly.
  • Administer emergency treatment when necessary.
  • May accompany children to the community.
  • May assist children to feed themselves.
  • May work at more than one location.
  • Assist with playground supervision.
  • Collaborate with staff and administration while performing duties.
  • Reinforce lessons with small groups.

Position Type

Responsibilities
  • Primary responsibility is direct support to students with special needs
  • Participate in activities planned by the after-school program staff
  • Assists in the preparation and development of instructional training activities and materials
  • Assists the after-school program staff with in-class activities based on specific instructions
  • Assists the after-school program staff in maintaining a neat and orderly classroom environment by keeping materials and equipment organized
  • Assists the after-school program staff in maintaining a good learning atmosphere by using effective teaching and behavior management techniques
  • Under direct supervision of the after-school program, staff may assist with assessing student needs
  • Provides the after-school program staff with general impressions and observations of students they work with
  • Works with students individually, in small groups, whole groups or learning centers planned by the after-school program staff and provides instruction to student
  • May assist with classroom technology, adaptive devices, and equipment
  • Assists with social skills

Experience
  • Recent experience in working with groups such as youth groups, child centers, or playgrounds and/or experience requiring organizational skills is desirable.
Education
  • Proof of High School Diploma or equivalency; or proof of an A.A. degree, 48 college units; or pass the Paraeducator Exam
