Job description

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program approval, award amount (up to $200,000), and eligibility period (1 to 5 years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the EDRP application. Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply.

Duties

The primary responsibilities of the Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) - Pulmonary Function Technologist (RPFT) at the New York Harbor VAHCS include diagnostic evaluation, patient assessment, and providing patient care services to inpatients and outpatients. This involves patient instruction, testing, equipment and computer setup, troubleshooting, and preliminary interpretation.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Performing pulmonary function tests and assessments.
  • Providing patient education and instructions.
  • Maintaining and troubleshooting testing equipment.
  • Preliminary interpretation of test results.
  • Ensuring quality control and safety procedures are followed.
Requirements
Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.

Basic Requirements:
  • Citizenship: Must be a citizen of the United States. Non-citizens may be appointed when qualified citizens are unavailable.
  • Education: Successful completion of a respiratory care program accredited by CoARC or its successor.
  • Licensure: Must possess and maintain a full, current, and unrestricted license from a state to practice as an RRT.
  • Credential: Must hold and maintain a valid, current, unrestricted RRT credential, specifically CPFT or RPFT.
Grade Requirements:

All individuals must meet the basic qualification requirements and be assigned to the appropriate title. Advanced assignments (e.g., GS-12) include specialized duties in pulmonary, polysomnography, or combined areas, performed under supervision of a qualified physician.

Experience, Licensure, and Credential:
  • One year of creditable experience at the GS-11 level demonstrating relevant competencies.
  • Active license and RRT credential.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of complex pulmonary function testing procedures.
  • Ability to establish quality control programs.
  • Skills in analyzing diagnostic specimens and information.
  • Skills in assessing and responding to adverse actions during testing.
  • Ability to train and provide clinical consultation on pulmonary procedures.
Assignment:

Higher-level duties involve complex testing, monitoring, quality review, and staff training, performed at least 25% of the time, with full scope of responsibilities as defined for the GS-11 level.
