Job summary

Bird Electric Enterprises, a Black & Veatch company, seeks a Fleet Manager - East to oversee the day-to-day operations of the East regional fleet and partner with field operations to meet business needs.

You will lead regional Fleet Operations, coordinate with the Director of Fleet & Tooling Management, and drive utilization, maintenance, and lifecycle decisions across assets. The role requires travel to regional sites and collaboration with multiple departments.

Qualifications

• Minimum of seven (7) years of fleet, equipment, transportation, maintenance, or construction operations experience.
• Experience managing fleet or equipment operations in a field-based environment.

• Strong understanding of vehicle and equipment maintenance, utilization, and lifecycle management.

Responsibilities

Job Summary

The Fleet Manager - East is responsible for the day-to-day operational performance of the Bird Electric fleet within the East region. This position serves as the primary regional fleet leader and business partner to field operations, ensuring vehicles and fleet assets are available, reliable, properly utilized, maintained, and aligned with operational requirements.

• The Fleet Manager is a field-oriented operational leader who will work closely with regional and project leadership to understand business requirements, anticipate fleet needs, resolve operational issues, and continuously improve fleet performance.
• This position will lead regional Fleet Operations while partnering closely with the Director of Fleet & Tooling Management and centralized functional leaders responsible for fleet administration, tooling, compliance, systems, procurement, and enterprise fleet strategy.
• The Fleet Manager is accountable for regional operational outcomes, including asset availability, utilization, maintenance performance, rental reduction, lifecycle management, cost control, and customer service to field operations.
• The Fleet Manager is expected to operate as a regional operational leader within a broader functional organization, ensuring regional execution is consistent with enterprise strategy, standards, policies, and priorities.

Key Responsibilities

Fleet Operations & Regional Accountability

• Own the overall operational performance of the East regional fleet.
• Serve as the primary fleet point of contact for regional and field operations.
• Ensure fleet assets are available, reliable, safe, and appropriately assigned to support business requirements.
• Maintain accurate visibility into vehicle and fleet asset assignments and ensure assets are aligned with employee, project, and operational needs.
• Monitor fleet utilization and identify underutilized, excess, idle, or improperly assigned assets.

Maintenance & Asset Reliability

• Provide regional oversight of fleet maintenance activities and asset reliability.
• Ensure preventive maintenance requirements are identified, scheduled, and completed.
• Escalate significant reliability, safety, or lifecycle concerns to the appropriate functional leader.
• Support standardized maintenance practices and enterprise fleet standards established by Fleet & Tooling Management.
• Ensure maintenance activities are appropriately documented within designated fleet systems.

Utilization, Rentals & Cost Management

• Drive regional fleet utilization and minimize unnecessary rental vehicles and equipment.
• Provide accurate operational input for fleet budgets, forecasts, replacement plans, and capital requirements.
• Analyze utilization and operating data to identify opportunities for improved fleet efficiency.

Asset Lifecycle & Replacement

• Evaluate regional fleet condition, utilization, age, reliability, and operational requirements.
• Provide regional input into fleet replacement forecasts and capital planning.
• Ensure replacement recommendations are based on operational need, utilization, lifecycle cost, and asset condition rather than individual preferences.

Field Operations Partnership

• Develop strong working relationships with regional operations leaders, project managers, supervisors, and field personnel.
• Participate in operational planning where fleet availability or capacity may impact project execution.
• Establish clear expectations with operations regarding fleet responsibilities, asset care, utilization, reporting, and escalation.

Cross-Functional Alignment & Enterprise Partnership

• Partner closely with the Director of Fleet & Tooling Management and other functional leaders to ensure regional operations align with enterprise strategy, standards, policies, and priorities.
• Participate in regular cross-functional operating reviews to share regional performance, identify issues, establish priorities, and coordinate corrective actions.
• Provide timely regional input, field intelligence, and operational feedback to functional leaders to improve enterprise processes and standards.

Management Responsibilities

Supervises work of others. Responsible for hiring, discipline, and pay administration of their subordinates.

Minimum Qualifications

• Minimum of seven (7) years of relevant fleet, equipment, transportation, maintenance, or construction operations experience.
• Demonstrated experience managing fleet or equipment operations in a field-based environment.
• Experience leading people and managing operational performance.
• Strong understanding of vehicle and equipment maintenance, utilization, and lifecycle management.
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively with field operations and senior leadership.
• Strong organizational, analytical, communication, and problem‑solving skills.
• Ability to travel regularly to regional field locations.
• Ability to work effectively across multiple locations and operational teams.
• Ability to complete required pre‑employment onboarding requirements, which may include background checks, drug screening, and motor vehicle records searches in compliance with applicable laws and regulations.

Preferred Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Business, Construction Management, Fleet Management, Technical Management, Purchasing, or a related field.
• Relevant experience may be substituted for a degree.
• Experience managing fleet within utility, power, industrial, construction, or other field‑service environments.
• Experience managing geographically dispersed fleet operations.
• Experience with fleet management systems and telematics.
• Experience with fleet utilization, rental reduction, lifecycle planning, and cost management.
• Mechanical or equipment maintenance background.
• Experience managing a fleet in a rapidly growing organization.
• Experience implementing standardized fleet processes across multiple regions.

Work Environment/Physical Demands

This position requires regular travel to field operations and regional locations. The Fleet Manager will work in both office and field environments and must be comfortable interacting with field personnel, mechanics, vendors, project teams, and leadership. The position may require occasional extended travel based on operational requirements.
