Job summary

Brooklyn Public Library is hiring for a supervisory custodial position responsible for cleaning and maintaining regional library facilities and enforcing safety standards. The role includes training custodial staff, scheduling work, and evaluating performance to ensure high-quality service across branches.

The ideal candidate has a high school diploma or equivalent, 3–4 years of relevant building operations experience, and a valid New York State driver’s license.

Qualifications

• High School diploma or equivalent; relevant trade/craft school training preferred
• Minimum of three (3) years relevant experience and/or a minimum of four years substantial building operations experience outside the Library system
• Excellent communication skills, both verbal & written
• Demonstrated supervisory experience and skills. Ability to schedule, supervise, train and evaluate personnel
• Must have working knowledge of custodial/maintenance building operations
• Basic computer skills. Knowledge of word processing and spreadsheets desirable
• Be available to work all shifts including evenings, Saturday, Sunday or holidays if required
• Demonstrated ability to work independently
• Valid New York State driver’s license.

Responsibilities

• Performs typical custodial tasks within a region including but not limited to dusting, sweeping, buffing, floor stripping, mopping, cleaning sidewalks, etc.
• Trains other custodial personnel on proper methods of cleaning and operation of equipment; Assists the Team Coordinator in the scheduling of work
• Evaluates the work of custodial personnel in a Region; makes appropriate recommendations and takes appropriate action to insure that work is performed in an effective, efficient and quality manner
• Routinely inspects the branches in the region to assure delivery of high quality service and to note building conditions; takes necessary actions to remediate problems
• Oversees the operation of a low –pressure heating system within the Regional building
• Monitors efficiency, economy and quality of work performance, proper use, cleanliness and storage of tools
• May participate in or supervise the making of minor repairs and report conditions requiring services of mechanics
• Arranges for, supervises and may assist with the moving of furniture and equipment
• May make acceptability reports on the work performed by maintenance staff and outside contractors
• Enforces safety standards, Requisitions stores, issues and inventories custodial supplies and equipment within a Region. Maintains appropriate records as required
• Assists the Team Coordinator with timesheets and other records, prepares reports on work activities, and initiates work orders as necessary
• Performs other related duties as necessary
