Job summary

Municipality of Anchorage is seeking a Park Maintenance Worker to help maintain park lands, facilities, trails, and grounds across MOA sites. The role involves seasonal and routine upkeep, including turf and irrigation work, litter removal, fence and shelter maintenance, and event support, with varied shifts and locations.

  • Perform routine maintenance on a variety of parks or facilities, including turf, irrigation, litter collection, trail work, and equipment cleaning and repair.

This position is represented by the Public Employees, Local 71, and is subject to the provisions of the current agreement between the Municipality of Anchorage and the Union.

DEPARTMENT: Parks & Recreation
HOURS OF WORK: Schedule varies: 4/10's-Mon-Thu, 6am-4:30pm; Tue-Fri, 6am-4:30pm, Fri-Mon, 6am-4:30pm; all shifts with 30-minute meal period.
LOCATION: Varies: North Park Maintenance Shop-2839 Mt. View Drive; South Park Maintenance Shop-11440 Lang Street

Employees who are hired or rehired to any position shall be placed at the entrance pay step, and advancement from the entrance step to the maximum step within a pay grade shall be by successive steps.

Applicants shall be referred and considered for this position in the order as follows per the Collective Bargaining Agreement:
  • Internal applicants currently working under the Public Employees (Local 71) Collective Bargaining Agreement
  • Local union dispatched applicants
  • External applicants and other current Municipal employees not covered under this agreement

The position will maintain the Municipality of Anchorage (MOA) park land and sports facilities, outdoor recreation facilities, trails, and municipality-owned grounds. Routine maintenance to a specific project or specialized area of responsibility at one park or recreational facility, or at several parks or areas. Winter duties may include, but are not limited to, litter collection, snow & ice removal, outdoor recreational ice maintenance, trail grooming and maintenance, special event preparation and support, and general grounds and facility cleaning and repair. Summer duties may include, but are not limited to, turf and irrigation maintenance; litter collection; athletic and multi-use field maintenance; trail maintenance; park fence and barrier repairs; park shelters, amenities, and equipment cleaning and repair; special event preparation and support; and general grounds and facility care. Other duties as assigned.

Three (3) months experience in lawn, landscape, trails, construction, grounds, or facility maintenance.

Must possess a valid State of Alaska Driver’s License with satisfactory driving record at time of hire.

Employment is conditional based on a satisfactory background check which includes criminal, education, and employment history.

If selected for hire, the appointment in this position will be conditional based upon a satisfactory Municipal Employment Office conducted Background Check. A Background Check encompasses criminal history, verifying education, and verifying dates of employment.

If selected for hire, appointment in this position will be conditional based upon the submission of a current copy of the applicant's Alaska Driver's License, and a current (dated within 30 days from date requested) copy of his/her Department of Motor Vehicle driving record, including a driving record from previous states, if the Alaska Driver's License was first issued within one year prior to application, documenting an acceptable driving history. All required certifications and/or licenses must remain current for the duration of employment.

As a condition of employment, the candidate selected must provide their Union Dispatch Referral Form by the time of hire.

Military Service Interview Preference

Veterans who wish to be considered for interview preference, as permitted in Municipal Personnel Rules 3.30.031 D, must attach to the application a copy of their DD Form 214, DD Form 256, NGB Form 22, or a letter from the US Department of Veterans Affairs, recognizing the person as a veteran. The attached documentation must show an honorable discharge or general (under honorable conditions) discharge. The minimum qualifications of the position must be met for preference consideration.

Individuals currently serving as a member in good standing in the National Guard or the organized military reserves who wish to be considered for interview preference, as permitted in Municipal Personnel Rules 3.30.031 D, must attach proof of current service to the application. Proof of current service can be shown by submission of a statement of service which, at a minimum, shows the full name, date of birth, Social Security Number, date service began, branch of service, rank, name of command providing the information, and unit of assignment. The statement of service must be on a form or letterhead of the individual’s command organization, and shows the name, signature, title, and contact information of the signer providing the statement of service. The minimum qualifications of the position must be met for preference consideration.
