SUMMARY

Working under the maintenance manager, the refrigeration technician will be responsible for maintaining, repairing, and optimizing our industrial refrigeration systems, with a focus on ammonia-based systems. This role ensures safe, efficient, and continuous plant operation while adhering to OSHA, EPA, and company safety standards. This position requires strong mechanical aptitude, communication, analytical, troubleshooting, interpersonal, and team building skills to support site objectives.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Perform routine maintenance and inspections of ammonia-based industrial refrigeration systems, including compressors, evaporators, condensers, and piping systems.
• Conduct troubleshooting, diagnostics, and repair of mechanical and electrical components associated with refrigeration and ammonia systems.
• Diagnose and resolve issues with ammonia refrigeration systems, addressing malfunctions and ensuring optimal performance.
• Inspect compressors, evaporators, valves, control systems, and ammonia piping systems.
• Maintain accurate refrigeration logs and assist with HAZMAT response and procedures.
• Monitor system performance, identify potential issues, and implement proactive solutions to prevent equipment downtime.
• Ensure compliance with safety regulations and protocols, including PSM, OSHA and EPA standards, in the handling and operation of ammonia refrigeration systems.
• Perform regular preventive maintenance testing, calibration, and maintenance of control systems and equipment to ensure reliability and operational efficiency.
• Maintain accurate and timely documentation on all maintenance activities, including repairs, inspections, and preventive maintenance tasks.
• Perform other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of this role.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS (EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE)

• Experience in operating and maintaining ammonia refrigeration systems in a food manufacturing or industrial environment is required.
• High school diploma or equivalent required; technical certification or associate degree preferred (HVAC, Refrigeration, or related field).
• Strong knowledge of industrial refrigeration systems, including ammonia-based systems, and associated safety protocols.
• Refrigeration Engineers and Technicians Association (RETA)certifications-certified assistant or industrial refrigeration operator (CARO/CIRO) are a plus but not required.
• 40-Hour Hazwoper training is preferred (or willingness to complete).
• Advanced troubleshooting knowledge of refrigeration systems, particularly ammonia-based systems.
• Must be able to read and understand electrical and refrigeration meters.
• Working knowledge of HACCP (Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points) and GMPs (Good Manufacturing Practices).
• Proficiency in reading technical manuals, schematics, and blueprints.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
• Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
• Willingness to work flexible hours and respond to emergency calls as needed.

Physical Demands

The employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to climb, balance, taste, or smell. Must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 - 25 pounds, and occasionally more than 50 pounds with assistance from co-workers and/or mechanical devices. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts. Occasional exposure to wet, cold, and/or humid conditions. The employee will be handling items that may be very hot. The noise level is usually moderate. Must be available to work overtime, nights, weekends, and Holidays.
