Job summary

Discover Vision Centers is seeking a Refractive Technician to join a collaborative eye-care team serving the Kansas City area. No ophthalmology experience is required; we provide hands-on training and mentorship to help you build the necessary skills.

You will support physicians, perform patient work-ups, and conduct diagnostic testing while ensuring a smooth patient experience. A strong attention to detail and comfort with EMR systems are essential for success.

Qualifications

• Demonstrate advanced understanding of ophthalmic assistant skills per JCAHPO guidelines.
• Basic understanding of optics and ability to perform refractometry.
• Knowledge of optics, refraction, and contact lenses.
• Strong attention to detail in diagnostic testing.
• Proficiency with computers and EMR systems.

Responsibilities

• Gather patient medical histories.
• Perform patient work-ups and pre-testing.
• Measure visual acuity and conduct pupil assessments.
• Conduct diagnostic tests (applanation tonometry, OCT, corneal topography, keratometry).
• Perform manual refractions and assist with contact lens evaluations.
• Accurately scribe for physicians during exams.
• Support physicians and staff to maintain efficient patient flow.

Essential Skills & Abilities

• Demonstrate advanced comprehension of ophthalmic assistant skills as outlined by the Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO)
  
• Possess a basic understanding of optics and the ability to perform refractometry
  
• Demonstrate knowledge of the principles of optics, refraction, and contact lenses
  
• Maintain strong attention to detail and accuracy when performing diagnostic testing
  
• Demonstrate strong computer literacy and comfort working with EMR systems
  

What You’ll Do

Requirements

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required
• Strong computer and data entry skills
• One year of medical or ophthalmic office experience preferred
• COA or COT certification preferred, but not required for otherwise qualified candidates
• Excellent communication skills and a patient-first mindset
