Job summary

Marathon Petroleum Corporation in Carson, California is seeking an experienced Area Inspector to serve as the primary contact for fixed equipment integrity issues, including pressure vessels and piping. The role ensures compliance with state regulations, refining standards, and MPC specifications.

The Area Inspector will coordinate with operations and maintenance to mitigate risks, support turnarounds, and manage on-call weeks.

Qualifications

• Must have a High School Diploma or GED.
• Must have at least 5 years of Area Inspection experience in a refinery or petrochemical facility.
• Must hold API 510 and API 570 certifications or readiness to obtain NBIC and CA certification.
• Familiarity with RBI methodologies per API 580/581.
• Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook.
• Strong facilitation and leadership; effective cross-functional communication.
• Must wear PPE and pass hair drug test and physical exam.
• Licensed driver and legal right to work in the U.S.; travel up to 5%.
• Can work Monday–Thursday, 10-hour shifts, with extended hours as needed.

Responsibilities

• Conduct hands-on field inspections to evaluate fixed equipment condition.
• Plan and direct inspections, recommending mitigation for repairs or replacement.
• Perform jurisdictional inspections on CAL/OSHA-regulated equipment (e.g., boilers).
• Maintain equipment files and coordinate risk assessments with RBI analysts.
• Develop scope and documentation for mechanical integrity work and turnarounds.
• Complete MOC and INTELEX tasks as directed by Area Team Leader.
• Document as-found and as-left conditions to support risk-based work planning.
• Collaborate with engineering and area teams on reliability improvement projects.
• Assist in root-cause analysis, life-cycle cost analyses, and risk-based selection.
• Participate in required inspections training and specialty program management.
