Job summary

Marathon Petroleum Company LP – Kenai Refinery seeks a full-time Refinery Inspector to support the Inspection Group in Maintenance. Primary contact for fixed equipment integrity issues on process equipment and piping at Kenai, with duties including plan development, records in IDMS, and adherence to PSM and MOC requirements.

The role requires API 510/570, 3+ years in refinery inspection, and ability to work Monday-Thursday 7AM-5:30PM with after-hours calls and TAR support.

Qualifications

  • Three years of inspection experience in fixed equipment, reliability, or maintenance in a refinery or related industry.
  • Familiar with RBI strategy based on API-580/581.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.

Marathon Petroleum Company’s Kenai Refinery is currently looking for a full‑time Refinery Inspector for the Inspection Group in the Maintenance Department. This position is the primary contact for support associated with fixed equipment integrity related issues on process equipment and piping. The Area Inspector is responsible for ensuring fixed equipment is in compliance with state regulations, refining standards, and specifications. This role works closely with operations and maintenance to identify issues and mitigate mechanical integrity risks. The available schedule for the position is Monday - Thursday 7AM - 5:30PM, after‑hours calls are required several times a year and support of TAR every 3 years.

Key Responsibilities
  • Performs and/or coordinates fixed equipment inspections, including process equipment and piping, required by site mechanical integrity and inspection programs.
  • Develops and executes inspection plans / life cycle management for refining equipment based on service, design, condition, jurisdictional requirements, temporary repairs and equipment replacements, Turnaround (TAR) dates, and inspection history.
  • Prioritizes and plans work within the respective assigned area team.
  • Provides scope and supporting documentation (justification, timing, preparations, etc.) for fixed equipment mechanical integrity related work to Maintenance (Routine, Major Maintenance, Turnarounds, etc.).
  • Documents inspection records, findings, and recommendations in Marathon’s Inspection Data Management System (IDMS).
  • Completes all required documentation and interprets and applies industry and recognized and generally accepted Good Engineering Practice (RAGAGEP) codes and specifications.
  • Develops, revises, and maintains comprehensive inspection procedures, applicable guidelines, and work instructions.
  • Understands critical process variables that affect equipment reliability, identifies gaps, and leads gap closure effort.
  • Generates and provides repair/upgrade recommendations based on findings, options, and risk assessments in conjunction with area team and other departments on‑site.
  • Trains in the required areas of responsibility as identified by the Inspection Supervisor.
  • Program manager for special emphasis projects supporting site mechanical integrity program.
  • Reviews and applies Management of Change (MOC) requirements and ensures all Process Safety Management (PSM) elements are implemented.
Education, Experience and Skills
Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED (education must be obtained/completed prior to start date).
  • API 510 and API 570 certifications.
  • Minimum of three (3) years inspection experience in fixed equipment, reliability &/or maintenance in a refinery, petro‑chemical or other heavy‑related industry.
  • Familiar with Risk‑Based Inspection (RBI) strategy based on API‑580/581.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Ability to wear appropriate PPE in the refinery (respirator), perform all tasks in the field, and take hair drug test and physical.
  • Valid driver’s license (MPC determines valid status).
  • Steady employment history.
  • Ability to obtain a TWIC Card.
  • Legally authorized to work in the US without the need for future VISA sponsorship.
  • Travel requirement is 5% or less.
  • Work Monday‑Thursday 7AM‑5:30PM; after‑hours calls required several times a year and support of TAR every 3 years.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s or Associate degree in Mechanical Technology, Corrosion Technology, Welding Technology, or Non‑Destructive Technology (NDT).
  • API 653, 571, 580, and/or 581 certifications.
  • CWI/AWS/SW certifications.
  • ANST LevelII (UTT, RTFI, MT, PT) certifications.
  • More than three (3) years of experience as a refinery inspector working with industry‑related codes.
  • Extensive experience and understanding of RBI inspection strategies based on API‑580/581.
  • Experience with IDMS software such as APM and RBMI.
  • Relocation may be available.
