Responsibilities

The following statements describe the major elements of the position and are not an all-inclusive list of responsibilities, duties, or skills. The Referral Specialist acts as a liaison between insurance, healthcare providers, and the clinic to ensure referrals are processed correctly for medical specialty visits. Responsibilities include scheduling referrals at the request of providers or staff, communicating directly with clinics, patients, and referred providers, reviewing clinical data to report medical necessity to insurance companies, and performing all work aligned with the practice's mission, vision, and values. The Referral Specialist makes referrals to specialists, manages prior authorizations, and fosters positive relationships between the office and specialists. Additional duties include filing/scanning patient reports, retrieving patient records for prior authorizations, and completing insurance prior authorizations. The candidate should have knowledge of referral processes, medical terminology, and insurance plans. Excellent telephone etiquette, patient support skills, and the ability to navigate prior authorizations are essential. The role requires maintaining a positive image of the organization and a friendly attitude towards internal and external customers.

Qualifications

  • 2 years of experience in a clinical environment preferred.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology preferred.
  • Completion of a medical assistant program desired; certification within 6 months of hire.
  • Knowledge of Electronic Medical Records systems.
  • Excellent phone and customer service skills.
  • Positive, customer-friendly attitude.
  • Knowledge of prior authorizations and insurance plans.
  • Good organizational skills.
  • Ability to serve as a patient liaison and navigate the healthcare system.
  • Self-starter with multi-tasking ability.
  • Problem-solving skills for scheduling and referral issues.

The estimated total compensation range is $18.15 to $24.42 per hour, with the final offer based on experience, education, credentials, and other factors.
