Primary Purpose Of Organizational Unit

The Kathrine R. Everett Law Library supports the education of Carolina Law students, acts as a research partner with faculty and students, and serves the legal information needs of University students and faculty, the legal community, and the residents of North Carolina. To that end, the Law Library’s mission is:

  • To research, develop and implement innovative services, instruction and creative uses of technology to access, manage and communicate knowledge;
  • To collect, organize and preserve legal resources, and provide access to information to enhance and support legal and law related research and scholarship;
  • To teach formal courses in law, legal research and law related subjects in the Law School and the University;
  • To maintain a physical environment conducive to study, research and scholarship; and
  • To foster research, scholarship, education, and leadership in law librarianship, legal research, law, and information and library science.

Position Summary

The Kathrine R. Everett Law Library seeks excellent entry level and lateral applicants for the position of Reference and Business Law Librarian.

The Reference and Business Law Librarian will develop and maintain specialized knowledge in the areas of business law, securities and financial regulation, antitrust, bankruptcy, entrepreneurship, non-profits, and taxation. The librarian will participate in the faculty liaison program by serving as the primary liaison to the business, corporate, banking, and tax law faculty, fostering strong relationships to support their research and instructional needs. The librarian will participate in the faculty research program by conducting complex legal research projects. They will also liaise with the North Carolina Banking Institute Journal and the Institute for Innovation clinics, including Startup NC Law Conic, Community Development Law Clinic, and Intellectual Property Clinic to support student experiential learning. The librarian will create and maintain library research guides, instructional materials, and other resources that enhance access to legal information in the areas of business, and tax law. The librarian is expected to stay current on research trends, resources, tools, and databases specific to researching in the areas of business, and tax law.

The Reference and Business Law Librarian is responsible for providing general reference services and staffing the reference desk as scheduled (including some evening and weekend hours). The librarian also conducts in-office research appointments with students and participates in planning, scheduling, teaching, and evaluating educational programs. These teaching opportunities may include law school classes, guest lectures in seminar classes, library programming for students, and library tours for faculty, staff, students and other library users. The librarian will participate in law library teaching workshops focusing on pedagogy and excellence in teaching and law library scholarship workshops. The librarian will be active in law and library professional organizations and will contribute to the advancement of law or library practice through scholarship.

This appointment is governed by the Law Librarian Ranking Plan, which provides terms for multi-year contracts, reappointments, and promotions. The Reference and Business Law Librarian reports to the Assistant Director for Public Services of the law library. The Kathrine R. Everett Law Library provides the opportunity for a hybrid work schedule.

The Director may nominate the successful candidate for a Clinical Assistant Professor of Law appointment and for teaching for-credit courses in the law school upon meeting the requirements for such appointment as set forth in with the UNC Law Faculty Handbook. Overloads are compensated via stipends.

Minimum Education And Experience Requirements

Requires the Masters in Library Science ( MLS ) degree (or foreign degree equivalent). In specialized libraries, may substitute an advanced degree in the field of specialization (e.g., legal degree for a law library, or a history degree for a special historical collection within the library setting).

Required Qualifications, Competencies, And Experience

Master’s Degree in Library or Information Science from A.L.A. accredited library or information school and Juris Doctor from A.B.A. accredited law school required. All required degrees must be conferred by accredited institution prior to the employee’s start date.

Knowledge of legal materials and current research methods; organizational and project management skills and ability to work as part of a team; ability to interact positively with students, faculty, staff and the public; strong service orientation; strong legal analytical skills; excellent written and oral communication skills; demonstrated teaching ability; demonstrated interest in scholarship, publication, legal education, and the development of law

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, And Experience

Expertise or interest in developing expertise in the areas of business law, securities and financial regulation, antitrust, bankruptcy, entrepreneurship, and taxation

Demonstrated interest or ability to work with emerging technologies.

Experience with conducting in-depth legal research projects.
