Job description

Position Overview

We are seeking a senior-level Red Hat OpenShift Engineer with direct, hands-on experience executing VMware-to-OpenShift migration programs within large enterprise organizations. This is not an entry-level or junior role — we are looking for a seasoned professional who has done this work at scale, in complex enterprise environments, and can operate independently from day one.

The ideal candidate has led or been a key contributor to at least one real-world VMware exit program (not lab or proof-of-concept) at a large organization, using OpenShift Virtualization (KubeVirt) and the Migration Toolkit for Virtualization (MTV). They bring the technical depth and enterprise experience to plan and execute migration waves, resolve complex compatibility and performance issues, and collaborate directly with infrastructure, platform, and application teams — all while meeting the pace and rigor that large enterprise programs demand.

This role bridges traditional virtualization and modern container platforms, ensuring that enterprise workloads transition from VMware environments to OpenShift Virtualization in a secure, scalable, and operationally sound manner.

Key Responsibilities
Migration Planning & Execution
  • Plan and execute migration of virtual machines from VMware vSphere/ESXi environments to OpenShift Virtualization (KubeVirt) using the Migration Toolkit for Virtualization (MTV).
  • Perform workload assessment and disposition analysis, determining which workloads should be rehosted as VMs versus replatformed into containers.
  • Develop migration runbooks, cutover plans, rollback procedures, and validation criteria for each migration wave.
  • Design, deploy, and administer OpenShift clusters (on-premises bare metal and/or cloud-based) to support virtualization workloads at scale.
  • Configure storage and networking for migrated workloads, including OpenShift Data Foundation (ODF), Multus, NMState, and load balancing.
  • Manage cluster lifecycle, upgrades, and Day-2 operations for OpenShift environments.
Automation & Operational Efficiency
  • Automate migration, provisioning, and Day-2 operations using Ansible, GitOps (Argo CD), and CI/CD pipelines.
  • Establish repeatable, automated migration patterns to accelerate wave execution and reduce manual effort.
Troubleshooting & Validation
  • Troubleshoot performance, compatibility, and driver/tooling issues on migrated VMs and remediate post-cutover.
  • Validate workload performance and stability against defined acceptance criteria after each migration wave.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
  • Partner with infrastructure teams, application owners, and client stakeholders to sequence migration waves and minimize business disruption.
  • Translate workload requirements into appropriate OpenShift architecture and configuration decisions.
Documentation & Knowledge Transfer
  • Produce migration documentation including runbooks, architecture references, and operational procedures.
  • Deliver knowledge transfer to client operations teams to ensure long-term platform sustainability.
Required Qualifications
  • Must have hands-on experience executing at least one VMware-to-OpenShift migration project within a large enterprise organization — lab environments and POCs do not qualify.
  • Must be senior-level — this role requires independent judgment, enterprise-scale experience, and the ability to lead technical workstreams without close supervision.
  • Must have direct experience with OpenShift Virtualization (KubeVirt) and the Migration Toolkit for Virtualization (MTV) applied in a real production environment.
  • 5+ years in infrastructure or platform engineering, with 3+ years of hands-on Red Hat OpenShift administration.
  • Strong VMware background including vSphere, ESXi, vCenter, vMotion, and VM storage/networking concepts.
  • Solid Kubernetes fundamentals: operators, CRDs, RBAC, networking (CNI), and persistent storage (CSI).
  • Experience with storage for virtualization workloads, such as OpenShift Data Foundation (Ceph) or equivalent enterprise storage.
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux administration and scripting proficiency (Bash, Python).
  • Automation experience with Ansible and infrastructure-as-code practices.
  • Strong professional communication skills — ability to work directly and credibly with client teams and enterprise stakeholders.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or related field (or equivalent experience).
  • Red Hat certifications such as EX280 (OpenShift Administration), OpenShift Virtualization Specialist, or RHCE.
  • Experience with Red Hat Advanced Cluster Management (ACM) and Advanced Cluster Security (ACS).
  • GitOps tooling (Argo CD, Tekton) and enterprise CI/CD integration.
  • Application containerization experience using the Migration Toolkit for Applications (MTA).
  • Experience on large-scale VMware exit programs (100+ VMs) driven by licensing or cost optimization.
  • Background in regulated or enterprise environments with formal change management processes.
