Job summary

The City and County of Broomfield is seeking a Recycling Technician to support the Recycling Center, residential waste services, and related waste streams in compliance with laws and regulations. You will assist with administrative duties, education outreach, and data-driven program improvements.

The ideal candidate is customer service oriented and proficient with digital tools to advance sustainability goals and engage with the community on zero-waste initiatives.

Job description

The Recycling Technician performs technical and administrative work related to the City and County of Broomfield’s Recycling Center, residential waste services program, and interdepartmental recycling, solid waste, universal waste, and hazardous waste. This role has knowledge or background in material diversion and management of the City and County’s various waste streams and waste storage/recycling facilities in compliance with all applicable laws and regulations. Responsibilities also encompass assisting with the residential waste services program’s administrative and customer service efforts including developing materials for and delivering zero-waste education and community outreach. The role provides education, program planning, data tracking, and outreach activities for internal and external customers.

The ideal candidate is customer service-oriented, knowledgeable, and comfortable using technology, data, and digital tools to support sustainability efforts.


COMPENSATION PACKAGE
  • Salary Range: $27.49–$37.19 Hourly

  • Manages the Broomfield Recycling Center, keeps the facility/drop-off clean, and maintains an appropriate level of hygiene.
  • Provides recycling guidance and additional reuse-and-reduce strategy resources to residents.
  • Provides routine preventative maintenance to recycling center equipment and grounds, shovels snow and maintains walkways as needed.
  • Ensures buildings are locked and secured.
  • Organizes, processes, and inventories the City’s solid, recycled, universal, and hazardous waste streams.
  • Coordinates and manages the internal battery recycling program, monitors internal municipal facilities and waste stations for quality control, and performs manual sorting of recyclables as necessary.
  • Tracks and compiles recycling and yard waste operational data.
  • Performs data collection, metrics tracking, and analysis for waste, recycling, and diversion program planning.
  • Assists in implementation and maintenance of the residential waste services program, including but not limited to, customer service, contract metrics, and general administrative efforts.
  • Assists with developing and implementing internal and external education and outreach initiatives regarding zero waste, source reduction, and diversion strategies.
  • Collaborates with community-based organizations, local agencies, schools, and local groups to conduct “train the trainer” sessions and align messaging.
  • Works community events, outreach tabling, and performs public presentations.
  • May provide training and indirect supervision over assigned staff or volunteers for special projects or events.
  • Reads, understands, and enforces compliance with laws and regulations pertaining to health and safety, hazardous waste management, transportation, and waste disposal.
  • Assists in emergency responses at the recycling center involving hazardous materials exposure and minor chemical spill clean up as needed.
  • Monitors surveillance system at the recycling center for illegal dumping and activities, reporting findings to Code Enforcement.
  • May work events or other duties requiring evening and/or weekend work.
Education
  • High School Diploma/GED - required.
  • Associate’s degree from an accredited college or university in Environmental Science, Chemistry, or a related field - preferred.
Experience
  • 1 year experience required in hazardous materials management and/or planning, implementing, and evaluating public education programs - required.
  • Experience with heavy equipment operation - preferred.

Years of related experience may be substituted for required education, however education cannot be substituted for the necessary work experience. Candidates must meet the minimum required years of work experience.


NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Must be 18 years or older. Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and safe driving record for continued employment. New hires must, as a condition of employment, pass the following pre-offer and post-offer/hire processes: in-person or virtual interviews, reference checks, DMV check, background checks including local police check and sex-offender registry.

  • Work is generally scheduled Monday through Friday with some weekend, evening and holiday work required.
  • In-person customer/client/team meetings required.
  • Regular, predictable attendance required
  • Work is performed at City/County work locations.
  • Physical demands are described as medium (exert up to 50 lbs. of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 lbs. of force frequently, and up to 10 lbs. of force constantly to move objects).
  • Duties require a full range of physical motion and activities including manual digging, pushing, pulling, lifting, twisting and turning the upper body, stooping, kneeling, crouching, climbing, balancing, crawling, reaching for objects, walking, and standing.
  • Must also be alert to peripheral activities when operating equipment and therefore must have a full range of movement in the neck and shoulders.
  • May occasionally be exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals, fumes, or airborne particles.
  • Tasks may require use of a computer for several hours.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, depth perception, ability to adjust focus, color vision, and peripheral vision.
  • The noise level in the environment is moderate.
  • Travel by automobile is required to attend meetings or gather items.
