Job summary

The Harris County Public Defender’s Office is seeking a meticulous Recruitment Coordinator to support attorney and staff recruitment, internships, and outreach. You will collaborate with the Recruitment Director, Internship Coordinator, and legal staff, coordinating events, postings, and travel as needed.

Position Overview:

The Harris County Public Defender’s Office is seeking a highly organized, detail-oriented, and mission-driven Recruitment Coordinator to support the daily operations of attorney, staff, and internship recruitment. The Recruitment Coordinator provides administrative and operational support to the Recruitment Director and helps ensure a smooth, professional, and responsive experience for candidates throughout the hiring process. The position coordinates interviews and candidate communication, maintains recruitment records and tracking systems, supports recruitment events and outreach, and provides administrative support for internship recruitment and programming. The Recruitment Coordinator manages a combination of assigned responsibilities and recurring processes and works closely with the Recruitment Director, Internship Coordinator, attorneys, supervisors, and other office stakeholders.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Coordinate candidate interviews across divisions, including scheduling, panel coordination, confirmations, interview materials, follow-up, and scheduling changes.
  • Serve as a point of contact for applicants and provide timely, professional, and consistent communication throughout the recruitment process.
  • Track applicants throughout the hiring process and maintain accurate recruitment records, trackers, spreadsheets, databases, and candidate status information.
  • Monitor recruitment calendars, timelines, deadlines, and outstanding items and follow up with candidates and internal stakeholders as needed.
  • Prepare and distribute recruitment correspondence, interview materials, job postings, and other recruitment-related materials.
  • Coordinate administrative and logistical needs for career fairs, law school visits, recruitment events, outreach activities, and recruitment-related travel.
  • Support job postings and outreach through law school job boards, listservs, recruitment platforms, and other approved channels.
  • Provide administrative and logistical support for internship recruitment and programming, including application tracking, interview scheduling, candidate communication, onboarding, assignments, evaluations, and program logistics.
  • Perform other administrative and operational duties in support of recruitment activities as assigned.

Education and Experience:

  • Associate’s or bachelor’s degree.
  • One (1) to three (3) years of experience in recruitment, human resources, administrative support, program coordination, or a related field.
  • Experience supporting recruitment or hiring processes, including candidate communication, interview coordination, applicant screening, or applicant tracking.
  • Experience coordinating schedules, events, programs, or other multi-step administrative processes.
  • Experience using applicant tracking systems, databases, spreadsheets, or similar tracking tools; experience with NEOGOV is a plus.
  • Experience working in a legal, government, public service, higher education, nonprofit, or similar professional environment.
  • Interest in public defense or public service.
  • Professional and responsive communication style with the ability to work effectively with candidates, attorneys, supervisors, students, and external partners.
  • Adaptable and comfortable working in a fast-paced, growing, and evolving environment.
Position Type and Typical Hours of Work:
  • Regular Full-time | The anticipated start date is October 2026, subject to final fiscal year funding. A contingent offer may be extended prior to that date.
  • Hours will be discussed during departmental interview. Some evening or weekend availability may be required for recruitment events and outreach activities.

Work Environment and Physical Demands:
  • This position is primarily in-office and may require occasional travel to recruitment events, career fairs, law schools, and other outreach activities.
Reporting Relationship:
  • This position reports directly to the Recruitment Director and works closely with the Internship Coordinator and other members of the Harris County Public Defender’s Office.

Employment may be contingent on passing a drug screen and meeting other standards.
